They knew the report was bogus a year before the State of the Union.
On a side note, this is being referred to as "Yellowcake-gate", but that doesn't roll off the tongue. Any other suggestions?
How about "That really big Nigerian coverup that was used as an excuse to overthrow a foreign government"? Or, to give the government the benefit of the doubt, "Yellowcake Mistake"
Why do we have to put "Gate" at the end of everything? Yes, the Watergate hotel scandal was one of the first large media driven political scandals, but why the hell does that prevent people from coming up with non-Watergate related names?
Tailhook at least had an original name... although I think CNN called it Tailhook-Gate for a while.
I don't know why the -gate became the scandal suffix. It doesn't always stick those (e.g. Whitewater -- but maybe because Whitewater-gate would just be way too confusing).Originally Posted by Jim F.
William Safire was the guy who started adding "Gate" to the end of everything. Now why an ex-speechwriter for and fan of Richard Nixon would seek to minimize the memory of Nixon's crimes by blurring every scandal in existence with his old bosses's heinous crimes, I have no idea!
I think Whitewater was called Paper-gate for a while, due to the Clinton's destruction of Whitewater documents.
Ok, that wasn't true and I take it back.Originally Posted by XPav

Just because that guy ended up being a fraud doesn't mean they're innocent. I've heard other reports that the CIA directly told Cheney.

If they can just stop spinning, maybe they could find a way to crawl out of this mess, but it's starting to look pretty bad.
