Report Sees Illegal Hiring Practices at Justice Dept.

Report Sees Illegal Hiring Practices at Justice Dept.

Justice Department officials over the last six years illegally used “political or ideological” factors to hire new lawyers into an elite recruitment program, tapping law school graduates with conservative credentials over those with liberal-sounding resumes, a new report found Tuesday.
It appeared to confirm for the first time in an official examination many of the allegations from critics who charged that the Justice Department had become overly politicized during the Bush administration.
It appears the politicization at Justice was so pervasive that even interns had to pass a partisan litmus test. ‘’

I thought you said, "Gonzales should be jailed. With a tool." Which reflects my sentiments somewhat more accurately.

Just read this on Yahoo. The shit baffles me.

Every administration attempts to stack the different branches slightly in their favor, but this takes it to new levels.

We sit around worrying about the corruption in all elements of the Iraqi government...we simply open our own closet and have plenty there to spare...

Gonzalez needs to be thrown into a cage with hungry bears. Along with Rumsfield, Wolfowitz and Cheney. With bacon rubbed all over their bodies.

I'd settle for giving them a tour in Iraq. Let them fight the war. Heh.

From what I read, this started under Ashcroft. So he can join Abu Gonzales and the bears.

I guess it's too much to hope that something comes of this, huh?

That would be a waste of good bacon.

And probably inhumane to the bears, now that I think about it.

Though I'd give all the bears "I've got Rummy in my tummy!" t-shirts.

Rove would have the bears under his sway and springing him within the hour. That man has The Dark Arts.

Pretty sure the only way to properly confine him would be with a suspended plexiglass cell, zero visitation and absolutely no metal.

I don't think I've ever seen quite such a stunning combination of hubris and stupidity.

Even Nixon never actually released a statement like this, as far as I know.

It's only stupid if Gonzales were at any risk of being prosecuted for his crimes. I think it's a given that nothing will come of this investigation.

What would they investigate exactly? This weakened our Justice Department, was clearly immoral and partisan, and reeks of the idiocy of the Bush administration. But they can hire whomever they please. What was illegal about it?

Actually, there are laws against it. Not only does it violate federal Civil Service laws, but also Gonzalez could be tried for perjury since he's previously denied he did so in front of Congress and under oath. Furthermore, any DOJ officials that did this could also be disbarred.

The shame is that beyond the perjury case, there's really no criminal prosecution avenue here. But now the DOJ is stacked with a bunch of right-wingers who got their jobs because of their political affiliation and this calls into question the impartiality of the DOJ in future cases stretching from voter fraud to civil rights. In essence, the neocons are going to be rewarded in the long term for breaking the law and lying about it.

I thought it was illegal to use political affiliation tests to fill non-appointee government positions?

They weren't dumb enough to ask you if you were a conservative at the interview, but if your resume didn't have the Federalist Society on it, your prospects were pretty grim.
