    Best PS3 Games

I just ordered the PS3/MGS4 bundle. I'm a little ashamed, but not too much. The PS2 turned out to be worthwhile, anyhow.

So are there any good games for the PS3 out now? I have to admit that at first glance I don't see many I care about -- my interest tends to be caught by RPG and strategy games (is it really possible none have come out yet?), but really top-notch games of any genre are fine with me.

Oh yeah, I'm not asking about exclusives. I passed on the Xbox 360 because I don't like Microsoft, don't like noisy machines, and don't like machines that break, but I'd have to admit it's clear that there are more and better games for that platform right now.

I was a little surprised not to see a thread on this subject already. Maybe my search was just no good? Or is the console really so weak in good games to date?

In my mind, no discussion of the best exclusives for PS3 is complete without mentioning Uncharted. A lot of games claim to give the feeling of playing a movie, but this game comes closest to that claim of all that I've played. The writing and direction are top notch and the voice acting and animation sell it completely. The game mechanics themselves are solid, though I think the enemies absorb a few too many bullets and the hit detection, especially with head shots, is a bit off. Still, I recommend the game whole heartedly as something that should not be missed if you're a PS3 owner.

I really can't think of much good RPG or strategy games unless you are willing to import.

Valkyria Chronicle from Sega is really fun, it's coming out in US later this year though.

    Give folklore a try, it's rpg/action

PS3 is really weak in this area right now. Only RPGs out are Oblivion and Enchanted Arms I think. Don't think there have been any Strategy games released for it in the US yet either.

Enchanted Arms is only available for Xbox 360, actually. Sigh.

EB Games' website has it listed for $19.99, but it isn't in stock within 100 miles of me, so I checked ye ol' ebay and found quite a few available.

I really, really enjoyed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Like all games, it had a few places that I found annoying. But overall, I found it really enjoyable.

I also ended up liking Resistance more than I thought I would.

Edit: Just saw MSUSteve's post on Uncharted as well. What he said is spot on.

Huh, sure enough. I was trusting gamestop's web site to at least list Enchanted Arms properly, but no, it doesn't, not for the PS3 anyhow. Nor does it list Folklore. Weird, you'd think they'd at least have it as "out of stock".

    For exclusives, I'd say ...

    Uncharted
    MLB: The Show
    Ratchet and Clank
    Resistance

... in that order. All are very good to great and well worth playing.

For non-exclusives, any 360 thread will probably give you the information you seek but GTA4 and Call of Duty 4 definitely top the list. Oblivion remains the best next-gen RPG released so far.

I realyl enjoyed Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Its been out since launch and is multi-platform so many dont think about it anymore, but its a great game and if you have any love for the comic book genre its a must play.

Ratchet and Clank, Burnout Paradise and Grand Theft Auto IV are the games you will hear about the most frequently and rightfully so, definitly worthwile purchases.

I personally don't like console FPS games, so even though Resistance and Drakes Fortune are supposably very good, they didn't appeal to me at all.

Folklore and Motorstorm are fun games if your into that thing. But medicore if your not. If you really have a craving go ahead and grab them, otherwise stick to those listed above.

Stay away from Spiderman 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog, those are my only PS3 purchases that I regret.

Civilization Revolution looks like it will be the first great traditional strategy game on PS3. Free demo sitting on PSN. Haven't tried it out yet, but looking forward to it.

Echochrome (spatial puzzles) and PixelJunk Monsters (tower defense) are solid, atypical strategy games. Only downloadable off PSN. Both have free demos.

As far as RPGs go, it's slim pickings. Folklore has a free demo -- I didn't care for it much, but it looks reasonably solid. Oblivion is obviously awesome.

There's a ton of RPGs in the works, though. Fallout 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Obsidian's Alpha Protocol and their Aliens RPG. Also curious to see how The Agency and White Knight Chronicles turn out. And I assume Mass Effect 2/3, if not Mass Effect 1, will eventually turn up on PS3.

Check out Gamefly for cheap used games.

Games I've played on either platform:

    Good:

Ratchet & Clank Future - best looking game on the system
Burnout Paradise - the demo's underwhelming, don't be fooled
Assassin's Creed - looks damn good on the 360, at least
Bioshock - if it ever comes out
GTA4 - you probably already have an opinion about GTA
Guitar Hero III / Rock Band - either or both are worth the money
    Orange Box - but I don't know if anyone's playing TF2 on the PS3
    Stranglehold - stylish shooting
LEGO Indiana Jones / Star Wars Saga - you really owe it to yourself to try them, and they have co-op, too
The Bigs - arcade baseball, the home run derby mode alone can chew up hours
Overlord - this was fun on the 360
Resistance: FOM - it has that Insomniac polish, but lacks intensity
Sega Superstars Tennis - I've only tried this a little on the 360, but I like the mini-games
Simpsons Game - if you're a fan, otherwise it's mediocre due to lack of polish
Godfather - a decent open-world game, decent amount of atmosphere & style
Uncharted - Tomb Raider with more shooting, less tits, and about the same amount of grunting
Unreal Tournament 3 - fast paced online deathmatching with dedicated servers. I'd swear more people are playing on PS3 than PC
Viking - well done kill-kill-explore-kill gameplay. Gets old if you try to play it all the way through without interruption

    OK:

Blacksite: Area 51 - doesn't suck as bad as many claim, just don't expect too much
Timeshift - another OK shooter, don't be put off by the lame first level
Medal of Honor Airborne - gets all sci-fi near the end, though
Motorstorm - attractive, but lacks personality
    Spider-Man 3 - half cool, half annoying
Warhawk - maybe if I tried harder, I'd like it. But it's fiddly.

    Avoid:

Full Auto 2 - lost what little charm the 360 original had
Heavenly Sword - it's pretty but it's button masher, those get on my nerves
Need for Speed Carbon - the most annoying NFS game I ever played
Sonic the Hedgehog - an insult to gamers everywhere
Transformers the Game - another insult from another company

You have to click the "Show Backordered Items" button near the bottom of search results to see out of stock items.

    And most importantly... Disgaea 3.

Is there any word on a new Dark Cloud? Dark Cloud 2 was one of my favorite games on the PS2. Or really, any system for that matter.

Edit: Ah, Wikipedia to the rescue: "One of our infiltrates, has revealed that Level 5 is working on a new Dark Cloud exclusively for the PlayStation 3. This title will come out in March of 2009, and will be developed using a new open-technology, the Japanese style "Kumo Engine"."

    PSN Games:

    Good:

Pain - enough physics-based abuse there to justify the $10
Everyday Shooter - a cool twist on the twin-stick shooter
Super Stardust HD - another twin-stick shooter, but this one's on a sphere!

    OK:

Calling All Cars - but only if you're going to do multiplayer
Flow - neat idea, but most gamers won't stick with it due to lack of .. well .. game

    Avoid:

Piyotama - it's cheap but its boring

If you are at all into football games, FIFA 08 deserves a mention as well. Together with Rock Band, GTA IV and Lego Indy, FIFA is among the games that are getting the most play time on my PS3.

I had a pretty good time with Bladestorm, a KOEI-style action-strategy game. That's not necessarily one everyone will like but a few of us here went for it in a big way. It's not a button masher like Dynasty Warriors or a deep strategy game along the lines of Romance of The Three Kingdoms but is a bit more of a look at the career of a mercenary and the forces he commands. There's a central storyline but quite a few randomized elements, and side missions, to keep things fresh. That said some might find it repetative as the battles tend to play out in similiar ways.

I loved the first 2. I hope 3 is in the works, and this isn't an unsubstantiated rumor.

Ooooh, that might sell me a ps3, provided it gets down to $200 around the time that releases.

Good choice on picking up the 80GB (BC FTW). There aren't too many RPGs on the system yet, but while you wait for the big hitters, there's some good stuff on PS2. I like Rogue Galaxy, and Persona 3 FES has seen lots of love across the web.

Also, like others have mentioned, Uncharted is a must-have. I think I'm on my 6th replay...it's great stuff.

Really? I read on GAF that the mutiplayer servers are empty on the PS3 version. I was thinking of picking it up on the cheap but decided not to if no one was playing online.

I want to second this recommendation. It really is a great SRPG with an awesome tactical battle system; my PS3 game of the year so far (MGS4 is in transit). The storyline is predictable but fun, and the cast of characters are your usual anime archetypes, yet still likable. If you don't do import games, definitely keep an eye out for the North American/European release this autumn.

Hm. My kid's playing it online right now.

In contrast, there was no one on the UT3 deathmatch PC servers yesterday when I was looking for a match -- had to go team deathmatch.

Resistance and Warhawk are the best PS3 games. If you want a fighting game, VF5 is on sale at Gamestop in-store and online for $20.

They had both been listed already but my two favorites are Uncharted which was one of my top few games from last year and Motorstorm which is very average in single player but superb in multiplayer once you learn the tracks.
