If any of you are fans of Firefly/Serenity, and also enjoy reading somewhat, there is a free novel, written by a very good author (Steven Brust), available online based in the Firefly 'verse and using the characters from the TV show. It is set between the end of the series and movie. It is really good. And free.
If any of you are fans of Steven Brust, and enjoy Western/Sci-Fi crossovers somewhat, there is a free novel, set in an interesting setting with interesting characters developed by a very good TV series maker (Joss Whedon), available online written by Steven Brust. It was written in 2007. It is really good. And free.

I take it you are neither a Steven Brust fan, nor a Firefly fan?
It's not viral marketing when you are providing a link to a free thing. you know.
I like Brust's stuff and read his blog, but I didn't read the novel, because I don't like fanfiction even when written by professionals.
I am torn. I adore Brust. I avoid Whedon properties. But it's also free and I will read anything.
I'm curious as to how well it stands on its own (that is, for people who don't know Firefly). I've read everything Brust has published, so I'd like to think that it is good independent of the TV show... If you wouldn't mind posting after reading it, I'd appreciate it.
I've read a lot of Brust (most of the Vlad Taltos series) and I am a just-shy-of-Browncoat Firefly fan. This seems like a great combination. I've downloaded the PDF, and I hope to get around to reading this once I clear out my backlog a bit.
Thanks for the link! I remember hearing about this, but I hadn't acted on it before. Now I have.
I found this to be a pretty enjoyable read, as a fan of the show. There's a section that kind of drags on with a multitude of flashbacks that I ended up skimming past, but overall well worth the time spent reading it.
I enjoyed the show, and I've been a Brust fan for 20 years now -- but I couldn't get into this.
I kept seeing the truncated thread title and thinking he'd been wrongfully imprisoned. Apparently, that's not the case.
I'm about a chapter in. Got it ages ago, just haven't had time to dive in until recently. As a huge Browncoat, I'm enjoying it a lot because Brust really gets the characters and their relationships, at least so far. VERY good stuff. :)
Very true. Not to derail the thread, but I've been trying to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'm rooting for the vampires.
Back on topic, I'm not sure why this bugs, but it does. It would be one thing if the author was submitting it anonymously on fanfiction.net, but attaching his real name to it just seems more...thefty. If I was lucky enough to be Joss Whedon, I'd be a little pissed.
Free Brust from writing hack fan fiction and get back to writing some better than average fantasy? I'm 100% behind that.
I don't begrudge him his jaunt into this Firefly world. Just like him to keep producing books for me to consume.
