I reviewed TOAW 3 for my now defunct website, and lost the serial number with the website. It's a great game, but I don't feel like paying for it after having been given it AND after buying the two earlier version. I need to save my money for the new Advance Tactics game whenever that comes out.

And apparently I need to pay for it again as well because their update broke my install and I can't find my downloaded installation file. Matrix says I don't have a right to download it again "because it's been too long."

Kind of pissed off right now. My working installation of the game doesn't work and their only support suggestion is that I uninstall and reinstall the game. Great.

Edit: Through no help of Matrix Games, I'm now redownloading the game. Digital River, of all people, had a way for me to find my order and lets me redownload the files for the game I paid for. Not sure why Matrix support didn't point me in that direction.

Try findmyorder.com if you purchased it when they were using Digital River.

I'd like to know why that happened too - we will do everything we can normally to make sure you can re-download. Could you e-mail me at erikr at matrixgames dot com with some information on who you spoke with on our support team? Regards, - Erik

Matrix became so much better after switching from the old company to this new one. Being able to download my games again is such a great thing. For example, I though I'd lost the CD I put Advanced Tactics on, and kind of freaked out, but then found it at findmyorder.com.

Have any of you played Combat Commander, the board game? I've been trying to figure out both how to pay for it and also who to play it with once I do get it. Is it easy for non-grogs to play?

Combat Commander is pretty straight forward, especially as you can play through the scenarios in order, adding more complexity as you go. It's an excellent game, and generally it 'generates' a pretty good story that you'll be talking about with your opponent once it's done.

Battlefront has just released Strategic Command WW1. Does anybody have any first hand knowledge about this game?

I have the WWII versions, and I've played the WWI demo (if only briefly). I'd definitely check out the demo if you're interested. The series uses a tilted square grid map, turn-based movement, and operates at a fairly high level of abstraction. Think Panzer General on a strategic scale--land, air, and sea units are discrete units, there's no stacking generally, and command and control is streamlined with HQ units and leaders but no super-complex chain of command.

The games really shine in giving you control over R&D and production, and in managing the political stuff like declarations of war (at least for WWII; I haven't seen how it works in WWI). It's sort of like Third Reich Lite in that regard.

My complaints are that no matter how beefy your machine is these games always seem to be a bit pokey in terms of scrolling around and AI turns, but nothing that a grog can't digest generally. The previous products have been good quality, well-supported, and pretty enjoyable.

findmyorder.com is the old company (Digital River). With Digital River, you've always had the ability to download your games again. It was an un-mentioned thing, but that $4 extended download service was something that DR tried to up-sell, not Matrix. Matrix had an agreement with them the there was no expiration.

Now that they are no longer in a business relationship, I'm not sure if that's still the case, though.

It worked for me just a few weeks ago, and that was after Matrix customer support told me I was SOL (though Erik responded to that here and elsewhere, see a few posts above). So DR is still supporting those older purchases.

I really wish Strategic Command hadn't switched to that awful, awful looking faux-isometric view. I just can't get over how bad it looks and makes figuring out the world much more confusing.

It's a bit disconcerting to me, too. Everything looks a bit, well, odd in that perspective.

Is the Field of Glory series best played multi-player or is it also good solo?

It is good both solo and multiplayer at first. After you play for a while, the AI stops being much of a challenge, but it is still fun in a "what if" sort of history fan way.

I really enjoy the historical scenarios. FoG is my go to game when I only have 15-30 minutes to play. I want the new expansion but dammit they are expensive. If I played more MP I'd have it by now.

I want to try one of the John Tiller Panzer Campaign games, Stalingrad '42. Anyone have any experience with this series? I love the Squad Battles series and want to try more JTS games.

You can try it for free now. He has released a fully functional demo game called Mius '43:

Does anybody know a good tactical Musket & Pike / Pike & Shot game? Board game or PC game. I've been considering one of the GMT games (Accursed Civil War, Under the Lilly Banners, etc.) but they seem to be out of print for the time being. If Field of Glory: Renaissance was on PC I'd probably give it a go, but I'm not interested in a tabletop mini game. As far as the PC, the only thing I've been able to find is John Tiller's Renaissance: Musket & Pike. The outdated interface and low resolution graphics are a turn off though. If it's a quality game I can deal with it.

    Thoughts, suggestions?

So, AGEOD's World War One Gold is currently $9 on GamersGate. I know the original release was atrocious. Has it been fixed up any? Anyone played the Gold version?

I have the Gold version, which I got on sale (though not THAT good a sale--nine bucks is amazing). Though I love WWI, I have not been able to get into this one, largely because for me it's just too intricate and complicated. It seems like a real labor of love, and I suppose if I was to devote 100% of my gaming to just it I could make sense of it but, um, as it is, it just sits there. For nine bucks though it's worth a shot--there's a lot there and if you can get your head around it it's probably a steal.

I have it. The PzC series is great if you like the old board game look. It will definately remind you of one. I love the series, probably own 12 titles.

If you like the battle they are great buys. They usually come with a lot of scenarios. The AI sucks in the large scenarios but can be a good learning tool. The AI is generally better in the smaller scenarios but even then you'll evetually kick butt.

Check out the Blitz to find opponents and advice. Since it's my first post I can do a link.

    go to theblitz.org .

Go forums and then to Tiller Operational Campaigns to ask questions about specific games or game play.

I'd buy the first game from NWS just to see if you like the series. Good site and cheap prices.

Or get the free demo from the John Tiller Software site. He's branched out on his own now away from HPS and doing digital downloads. The latest one, Tunisia, is quite interesting.

I have the Gold version, and I played the original too. I haven't been able to put much time into Gold yet, though, but from what I've seen, a lot of stuff has been fixed, and as far as I remember, they did fix a lot of stuff before releasing Gold, too. If you're interested, I'd say grab it. 9 bucks is pretty cheap, anyway.

Alright Grognards, what's the single best Wargame on the market today, regardless of era and why? Does the old Korsun Pocket still beat all comers, or is it something else?

I haven't played a wargame in years - tried AEGOD's Civil War but thought it was pretty poor - but I'm getting that itch again...

What kind of games are you in to? WW2? Sandbox? Squad, grand strategy?

Eduardo, every time I try to get too specific about a war game, the recommendations lead me to something that I don't like (like the aforementioned AEGOD's Civil War). So rather than narrow down the field again, what do you think is out there that's really an outstanding war game?

The only thing I'll say is that I dislike real-time strategy games...

Yep. Both are great, and they could not be more different. Other than both being about WW2, that is.

Just to make sure I'm keeping my facts straight. Isn't Command Ops real time and isn't the War in the East the $90 game?
