The hills of Los Angeles are burning.
This sounds awesome: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...318166da7226a8
Columbia has preemptively picked up "Battle: Los Angeles," a sci-fi spec from scribe Chris Bertolini, for Neal Moritz to produce via his Original Films banner.
The story follows one Marine platoon's encounter in the battle against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles.
"I love the idea, and I love the script. I like it all," Moritz said. "We are going to be in production within six months. What's attractive to me is that it's a huge event movie that can be done at a modest scale."
January's "Cloverfield" took a similar tack with the monster movie concept, though it did so with a handheld camera point-of-view. "Battle" will employ more traditional camerawork.
The hills of Los Angeles are burning.
No sale unless they get American McGee on board.
Will Smith as the wise-cracking, tough-but-lovable lead. Aliens killed by Los Angeles street toughs. Generic Los Angeles surfer/stoner dude says 'Whoa', when aliens blow up a car nearby. The Hollywood sign goes up in flames. Aliens get stuck in traffic on the I-5.
Generic summer blockbuster.
This sounds like movie masturbation.
But hey, at least the screenplay writes itself...
And no doubt they'll show some marine looking at a picture of his girlfriend/wife just before he's killed...
And it will be awesome.
Oh hell yes.
The first thing that springs to mind is Dragon Wars, which I have yet to see...
I don't know why; it just does.
The movie is getting a ton of press at Comic-Con and actually I'm getting some hope that it might be halfway decent.

Now testify!
(or alternatively)
Get back in the car, let's drive on by, everybody bump and grind!
There better be a metric frakton of RATM on the soundtrack.
Aw. I'm disappointed it's not based on the events of the Battle of Los Angeles during WWII.
According to an AICN article, it is! Or rather, the alien invaders were fought off in '42 and now they're back for revenge....
So it sounds like a mix of the hoo-rah Independence Day epic with the smaller budget and perhaps more mature themes of District 9. Color me cautiously optimistic.
Battle Los Angeles sounds like the name of an Iron Chef horror movie.
Yeah, though it would seem weird that in 1942 we were able to fight them off but just 65+ years later they are able to do all this and more.
The event in question occurred in early 1942 when spooked gunners opened up in the skies of LA with AA fire, searchlights, etc. It's never really been determined what they saw (if anything), and of course the photos from this event don't show much... it's dark, there are searchlight beams, and some flashes in the sky and clouds/smoke. UFOlogists have latched onto this event and claim they were shooting at UFOs or whatever. (This is also partially what inspired Spielberg's 1941.)

The ships that came in '42 were civilian colonizers. This planet was supposed to be uninhabited, and they weren't carrying any kind of defense technology. Once they escaped and reported back, a military force was sent to render the planet suitable for colonization.
I have no idea if this resembles anything in the movie, it's just my first thought for resolving that question.
Allez Cuisine!
