You really should have asked him.
I'm a phone tech and did work at a cigar place, and the owner gave me a cigar. He cut it for me and put it in a baggy, but I don't know the first thing about this. I don't even know which end I'm supposed to light. I'm guessing I won't even enjoy the experience since I'm only a very occasional smoker (i.e. maybe 6 times a year) but I feel I should at least try it since it was basically a gift. How do I go about this?
And please, no Clinton/Monica references. :) I'm serious here.
You really should have asked him.
If there is one end that is more tapered than the other, that is the end that you should be drawing the smoke out of, so light the other end. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
Most cigars are not meant to be inhaled, so roll the smoke around in your mouth to get the full flavor, and exhale it. Keep a lighter handy if you are not smoking the whole thing in one go. Smoke the cigar while drinking a glass of cognac, and enjoy.
Thanks. I'm more of a whiskey guy myself so hopefully that will suffice.
Anytime. The last good cigar I had was a cuban at my dad's promotion ceremony. Simply amazing. And whiskey should do just fine.
This is from the dominican republic - the company is the creole cigar factory. No idea if that's good or bad but I'll find out tonight when I try it. :)
Doesn't that mean it's rolled too tightly?
You smoke the end that the label is more towards. Take off the label either before you smoke it or during (pushing it towards you) before it burns to that part.
Other than that Siren covered it. Don't inhale. Draw it into your mouth and hold it there until it gets a bit hot then let it out. You should have an aftertaste. That's what youa re going for. Seriously, I never smoke a cigar without drinking something, even water, as it dries my mouth it (and it will your too). Whiskey and bourbon are PERFECTLY nice for cigar smoking, I've had them with coffee, port, wine and espresso too and all are good.
When you light it (ideally with a wooden match), take your time to gently draw in and either twist/turn the cigar or light the whole thing evenly by hand. Trust me, this will make the cigar burn evenly throughout and make the experience much more pleasurable as your cigar will look more like something Nick Fury has clenched in between his teeth and less like a big cigarette. Also, take the time to smoke it . . . a robusto/corona will take you half and hour to smoke. You may, as many cigar smokers do, want to read or have a conversation about politics or military history as you smoke it. :)
Or, failing that, plot world domination.
Cognac and whiskey are all well and good, but I might also recommend a good tawny port. The sweetness and acidity will help cleanse the palate between puffs.
Bushmill's Black with a porter back will make the harshest cigar taste wonderful.
Just reading this thread is making me want a cigar.
These cigars are making me thirsty!!!!!!!!!!
Or you could just sell the cigar to Fidel's brother.. Dennis. Or Dwayne!
