That's funny. I saw a link to the article before, but didn't realize it was Chet.
is owned by chet! I got an interesting shared RSS news story from a friend linking to a Washington Post security blog. Part of chet's Internet empire includes donotreply.com and he's not afraid to post the interesting stuff he gets.
Security is my day job, and I have to say good for you. I've dealt with far too many employees and vendors that like to get cute with SMTP addresses and it confuses the users and jacks my spam filters right up.
Thanks again for another entertaining site.
That's funny. I saw a link to the article before, but didn't realize it was Chet.
Whoever owns 1.com gets a shitload of spam thanks to me.
Chet, it says in that article you get millions of emails per day. Really?
That's amazing.
It actually spikes to millions. Some spammers will use it in their return address as well. It averages to 2-3 hundred thousand a day. God bless google apps for domains for handling it. The free account has gone over 10gigs of mail and they don't blink.
Also thanks for proving to me I should stop posting completely on QT3. I checked the comments on the post article today and saw someone who does not understand copyright or fair use decided to take a discussion here and try and link my name and valve to poetv. Even with their misunderstanding of the subjects clearly showing, it is enough...
It is great that when you are unable to discuss an issue, you are forced to resorting to such tactics. Ignorance wins. Ken P.... the ideals you are unable to express here are now all magically right because you chose a cheap tactic. Congrats. Stupidity will always win, because it isn't smart enough to know when to give up. I give up.
Bye,
Chet
What, exactly, did the post comment have to go with qt3?
Chet is a bigshot developer now, just like a hopeful presidential candidate he has to sever all his ties with the past lest they hurt his chances to make Half-life Episode 3 into a stunning display of linear gameplay and mute protagonists.
Dude that's awesome!Companies embarrassed by having their e-mails posted online can get him to pull the entries from his blog for a small payment. The normal fee to be removed from the site is proof of a donation to an animal protective league or humane society. So far, Faliszek says his blog has raised roughly $5,000 for local dog pounds

Softskinned much?
I think the same point has been raised here in several copyright dicussions with you either ignoring it or going of on a rant, that didn't really address it. I don't see how you canbe ahighly public owner of several sites, and then cry foul when people have an opinnion on what those sites do to make money.
People raise the issue a lot because they think they are clever or something. Chet has explicit permission from YouTube for his site.
I don't like seeing people driven out of public discourse by scorched-earth tactics like that, I think it's bad for society.
I blame me. Chet knows why.
"[email protected]" gets HEAPS of emails from sites I want to read that make you an enter an email address to see something.....
I don't think the issue is YouTube, the issue is other copyright holders. To which Chets answer has always been: I steal... get all my stuff from YouTube, it's not my fault that they have copyrighted material avaliable.
And if people have an issue with that, I can't see why it's not fair game to discuss where Chets other businesses are discussed.
I don't care, but I found Chets post pretty softskinned.
"Hi there, I own a bunch of pretty high profile websites that I'd prefer people didn't talk about..."
I don't think that was chet's point at all. While I agree that he can be too thin-skinned, in this case, the problem is that he's being portrayed as a representative of Valve. It's Valve he's looking to protect here, not himself. I think chet is absolutely right that any problem people have with him should be taken up with him. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I'm glad he realized it, though I hope it won't prevent chet from posting here anymore. I don't always agree with him, but I often value his contributions to this board.
Hey! Chet posted a link on poe-news to Yahoo's Are You Rich after I posted it here. Coincidence?
Also, there's a weird ad hominem element of "yeah, well, you work for Valve" in the attack.
Either what he's doing with donotreply.com is reasonable or it isn't; what he does for his day job doesn't have a goddamn thing to do with it.
If the only real argument against him publishing email he receives is that he works at a place that relies on intellectual property laws to help them make a buck, then, well, there really isn't a real argument against what he's doing with donotreply.com.
The whole thing smacks of "I don't like what you're doing, so instead of arguing with your position, I'm maybe going to make trouble for you at work". That's a really shitty thing to do.
Unfortunately, also an effective thing to do. I recently reverted back to posting under this name and putting my QT3 account under my real name into retirement due to similar fears. Employers often have no sense of humor at all and seemingly innocent things can get a person canned.
I prefer "[email protected]" but to each his own."[email protected]" gets HEAPS of emails from sites I want to read that make you an enter an email address to see something.....
A long time ago I used to use a certain but random domain as an email to filter spam. Only one time I used it by mistake when I was trying out the Amazon wish list. I got a reply from someone asking why I sent him my Amazon wish list! I apologized and said it was a mistake. I'll never forget he replied back and said, "well that's one way to get gifts just email random people. :)" Now I'll always feel bad for using his domain for spam. :/
I don't really see what the problem here is. This is the digital version of a company using 111 Main Street, Anytown USA. If there's an actual address that gets the returned mail/replies to that e-mail, the bloke at that address can do what he wants with the mail. Opening it is legal; you're the addressee. Whether you were the intended addressee should be irrelevant.
I also believe intellectual propery only applies to things like creative and artistic works, and trade secrets. Maybe one of our lawyers can help with that one.
The comments on the Washington Post article are deplorable. These people should shut the fuck up and be damn thankful that someone intelligent and honest registered this domain instead of the thousands of people out there that would actually use it for extortion.
That said, I'm glad to see Chet posting on donotreply again. I had forgotten about it when the posts had thinned out a while back.
[email protected] is another popular "dont spam me" fake address. The folks at asdf.com don't midn.
So did that post mark chet quitting QT3 or something?
