    Fastest processor for older Asus A7V 266-E mobo?

    We're looking for a quick update to add some speed to my parents computer. Upgrading the mobo is not an option since that would mean replacing vid card and memory, and with the health situation in our family, I just don't have the time to do a full system rebuild.

    Hopefully we can find a decent increase in speed for pretty cheap. I'm having trouble on Asus's website finding the motherboard, and I don't know where to look for older processors (for a good price). Thanks for the help!

    * Current cpu is a AMD Athlon XP1800+.
    * FSB is 266 MHz.
    * Northbridge VIA KT266/333
    * Southbridge VIA VT8233
    * 1 Gig of RAM

    Stolen from the bit-tech.net forums:
    "Athlon XP 2600+(266FSB)(Model 8)(Thoroughbred)" (it doesn't support the speedier Athlon XP Barton)

    but

    "Realistically, you are probably best going with an XP2400+ (the 266fsb 2600+ is virtually impossible to find)."

    And that was in 2006. So you'll have to search very hard for a 30-40% faster processor.

    Seems like a penny-wise pound-foolish upgrade to me; but if you intend to go through with it, check Pricewatch and eBay for CPUs. I've seen XP 2400+ and 2600+ in the $50 - $60 range.
