The Washington Post shows a (then) Vice President Richard Nixon swearing the newly elected Senator Strom Thurmond in back in 1955, and Strom already looks like an old man. Jeez...
What was remarkable about him, though, was he was always a ladies man. I remember in the 1990's, he had an 18-year old daughter (18 years old, and the guy was already in his 90's!), anway, she was killed by a drunk driver and Strom got on the anti-drunk driver crusade. But, my god, he must have fathered her in his 70's!!

The day he retired was a happy day for me. A more arch-conservative, pork belly, racist man never worked in our government in the last 50 years. But to make 100 years old is one hell of an accomplishment...So long Strom.

Living in SC, it's interesting seeing the reaction. The local news stations took over for the morning - and the paper had font size almost as large as when the bombing in Iraq started.
I found it interesting that when he retired & the paper did a whole rhapsodizing retrospective that there actually were a few letters to the editor (in the midst of all the "oh how wonderful he is" articles) saying it was about time he went & his accomplishment was simply staying in office and having an effective staff. That said, it's nice that he did choose not to run again, 'cause people in this state would have elected him anyway...
Ah well... at least we've finally got the confederate flag off the state house & out of chambers...
