    Kolchack The Night Stalker

This proto-X-Files show is now available for instant viewing on Netflix.

My impressions after half an episode are: kinda dull, some witty dialogue, nice photography for a '70s TV show. Also the lead actor played Sam Parkhill in "The Martian Chronicles." (He's the guy who opened a hamburger joint on Mars.) He is charismatic, which helps.

Anyone familiar with this show, and is it any good?

I recently rewatched the pilot of this (Kolchak vs. vampire) and an episode about an underground city. It was interesting to re-see the sort of thing that freaked me out as a kid, but it's ultimately way too 70s for my taste. A dusty relic, if you will.

Also, that lead actor isn't just "the guy from Martian Chronicles". Dude! That's Darren McGavin. I hope this thread has a thousand Christmas Story fans descending on you in a fury!

    The remake was shit.

The original is a cult classic. Which means the people who love it love it and the people who don't don't understand why the people who love it love it.

I used to love that show, but I haven't seen it for years. Like most other shows from the 70's, it probably hasn't aged well.

I couldn't even tell you why I liked it so much. Probably because Kolchak was a likable, interesting character, and it was more cerebral than "giant octopus eats Manhattan". Not that there isn't a place on television for enormous cephalopods.

Wait, what? Where can I find this TV show where a giant octopus eats Manhattan? Now that I want to see!

Scared the crap out of me as a kid, but that era of TV just really doesn't hold up. I'll keep my memories and avoid watching it.

From what I've seen so far it doesn't seem to be trying very hard to be scary. The tone is resolutely light hearted.

It hasn't aged well, but I LOVE the original show. For a long time it was my favourite TV show. The Vampire pilot is great.

I only have hazy memories of it (Aztecs cutting out living hearts, headless motorcyclist, Seattle under city) but it was scary enough to give me nightmares. It was written by Richard Matheson, wasn't it?

There were a lot of great contributers -- it was David Chase's first show, and he'd go on to produce Sopranos. Matheson did write for it, as did some other famous writers
