    Any black metal recs?

my only real experience is with Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, and some other stuff I find on my own, but nothing else out there really grabs me like Liturgy or Wolves. I was curious if you guys had any suggestions.

I liked Aanal Behemoth but didn't really like Abigail (i think because
it was a little too lo-fi but that could have been the bitrate too).

There's an American black metal outfit called Agalloch you might dig. It's makes for a nice gateway to the more extreme ends of black metal. Start with the album Ashes Against The Grain, which is pretty accessible.

    k will do.

Black Metal is rough because when I read about it or look into it, the whole "satanic" and "nationalist socialist" elements raise their head, but when you listen to the music, unless you can discern the lyrics, it's not readily apparent.

I can see that there's the need to be shocking or xteme! in the music, but when I look over some of these track names or better yet the lyrics (thank you encyclopedia metallum), it just makes me roll my eyes.

it's like the scribblings of a brooding suburban teen trying to outdo his peers.

I don't think that Witchmaster is exactly indicative of anything in black metal.

    Black fucking metal
    Chaos,loud & wild
    Death pain destruction
    The stage is burning now

    Witchmaster takes no slaves
    Storm nad Holocaust
    Worship versus scorn
    So fuck off & die
    Is definitely no:

The winds speed upon our twilight
    Thundersnow falls from the sky
Snowstorm that blind upon my eyes
From the clouds of red they are thrown
A thousand miles winter surround us
The dark marches while the world falls
The storm of the millenium rises
In massive size I hear its call
There's more poetry and insanity in black metal lyrics than almost any other metal subgenre. There's plenty of embarrassment, too, but dismissing it like you did above is ill-informed at best. NSBM is but a tiny, tiny fraction of the genre, but if Satanism (in the literal or metaphorical sense) bothers you, you're probably better off avoiding it.

Yeah i am pretty ignorant about Black Metal and I stated as much and the stuff I have listened to on my own is decidedly not really church burning national socialist leaning stuff which is why i came here to ask for recommendations

I don't really like WITTR or other shoegaze-y black metal, so unfortunately I can't really help you out there.

Why do you keep bringing up NSBM? It's such a small fraction of anything black metal related - I think you believe it to be a much bigger sample than it is.

You could always pay a visit to the Black Metal Lyrics Generator:

Thereat were quieted the fleecy cheeks
Such became Phlegyas, in his gathered wrath.
Fucks For a base wish it is to wish to hear it."

Ah me! what wounds I saw upon their limbs,
When they arrive before the precipice,
Travels And as he is who willingly acquires,

    Prophesies Rent Untarnished!

    Prophesies Rent Untarnished!

    Prophesies Rent Untarnished!

    Prophesies Rent Untarnished!

Prophesies Rent Untarnished! The Hordes Gather at the Gate of Peter! Aieeee! !

Daring and hardihood why hast thou not,
So that it tinged the one cheek and the other,
Claims Give us some one of thine, to be with us,

    Acid Jism Smoking Eyes! !!!
    I've heard worse.

again, my only exposure is through a handful of blogs like Into Thy Woods and it's popped up enough times there and through the association with the genre that it's a bit of a concern and as as a casual observer which is decidedly what i am.

I may be a bit sensitive to it because I've been accused of racism for liking Oi.

In nonblack metal news, I got the tour cd for brooklyn doom metal outfit Battilus which is the first release of theirs to incorporate the vocalist / keyboardist. I've only listened to it once, but it's pretty awesome. Vicious sounds layered and distorted. Great great stuff.

Certain blogs post more of that than others, and Into Thy Woods is one of them. When I first started listening to black metal, I came from a punk & hardcore background, and it blew my mind that people actually listened to bands like Burzum, Absurd, Arghoslent (death metal), Satanic Warmaster, etc. Now that I've listened to it for a few more years, I've pretty much stopped caring, but I understand the perspective you're coming from.

Just don't worry about it. Like I said, there are very few NSBM bands worth mentioning, and only a few of them have releases that you're likely to stumble upon when you're getting into black metal, especially if you're more into the shoegaze style of things. Try some Alcest and some Amesoeurs.

Though, if you're into oi and punk, there's plenty of dirty, thrashy, pissed off black metal that's well worth listening to, as well.

I've only listened to snippets but

Blut Aus Nord, "The Work Which Transforms God"

Is some black, black, black metal. If you're into it, it's excellent.

Oh, and BTW - thanks to everyone for contributing to this thread.

I've discovered some excellent music - in fact, it's contributed to a bit of a musical Renaissance for me.

Another nod for Agalloch. One of my absolutely favorite bands, second only to Opeth.

The newer Darkthrone stuff is a great mix of black metal and crusty punk/thrash/rock. I love it. The Cult is Alive is a good place to start.

Don't forget Neurosis. Not sure if they are considered Black Metal (they don't do Satan) but Enemy of the Sun and Through Silver in Blood have some Black Metal heaviness.

I'm no metal expert, but Neurosis is my favorite metal band by a very, very wide margin.

BUT I'm not sure I would label them black metal.

Not strictly black metal, but the latest Skeletonwitch album, Breathing the Fire, is fucking rad. Thrash/black metal, if that sounds like something you'd be into. If you just want straight ahead black metal I like Immortal or early Bathory, but that's pretty far removed from WITTR.

You mean that Neurosis being my favorite metal band by a very, very wide margin makes me a metal expert? Or something else? I am terribly confused.

Their newest release "Memoria Vetusta II- Dialogue With The Stars" is also very good. If you enjoy that type of thing that is.

That was amazing, look what I got:

To turn the wheel of any land-built mill,
Thus we descended into the fourth chasm,
Of They spake but seldom, and with gentle voices.

Who helped Amphion in enclosing Thebes,
The Master thus; and unto him I said,
    Under Then Florence doth renew her men and manners;

    Under! Prophecy Laser Beam!

    Under! Prophecy Laser Beam!

Under! Prophecy Laser Beam! Floss with Preistly Guts! !

Who had the enemies of his Lord in hand,
So that three winds proceeded forth therefrom.
Organ Made up a tumult that goes whirling on

    Cow Skulls Scream ABADON!!! !!!

The band name doesn't inspire confidence. Nor does the warlock-strewn album cover. Nor the fact that Crack the Skye is the last of a four-album cycle about Earth's elements. But before you sneer, "Hello, Cleveland," listen to Mastodon's thunderous, disciplined and expansive brand of metal.

There are plenty of bass-drum carpet-bombings, and "The Czar," a four-part ode to Rasputin — O.K., go ahead: "Hello, Cleveland!" — has all the whiplash rhythm shifts of vintage Metallica. But the album also has nods to European folk, free jazz and prog rock, and as produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam), it fronts a brawny sound that doesn't overwhelm the clarity of individual notes. Chuckle at lyrics about "the space-time paradigm" if you must, but the ambition and tenacity of Mastodon's music makes Crack the Skye sonically unforgettable.
    With friends like these..

Black Metal? I'd have to disagree here... Samael's new one is black metal. Sothis is black metal. Emperor were the fucking kings of black metal.

I love Agalloch as much as anyone, but even they don't call themselves black metal. Progressive folk metal is the a much description for them, but I dislike making such generalizations. I will admit, their music has black metal elements to it (especially their first CD) but they left that sound really early on and went into dark, folk territory.

Fair enough. I actually thought folk metal was an offshoot of black metal. Black metal is the subgenre I listen to the least, so I could have very well mis-characterized them.

There is certainly a lot of folk metal with black metal sensibilities, but they don't always have to overlap.

Wow, yeah dude, you are in for quite an experience then. They really changed their sound over the years. The latest one has gone full circle back to a stripped down black metal sound.

I highly recommend Eternal and Passage though if you're looking to get caught up with their best stuff.
