I think it does refer to people who are generally 'good' who 'break' from that lifestyle. Jessie uses it that way in Season 1.

That's how I interpreted it too when Jesse asks it of Walt (in Season 1).

Jesse: Some straight like you, giant stick up his ass, age what - 60? He's just gonna break bad?
    Walter: I'm 50.

This is from the pilot episode:

Jesse: "Nah come on... man, some straight like you giant stick up his ass all of a sudden at age what 60 he's just going to break bad."

    Walt: "I'm 50."

Meaning, you are dying of cancer (broken, breaking) : what are you going to do? cook meth (bad).

    Edit:Reed beat me to it.

I kinda see it like Papageno -- you're making a break for it, breaking from society. But I'd never heard it before I saw the show.

I really don't think the 'breaking' part refers to his cancer.

LOL, only in New Mexico? And did you gather this information from watching a certain television show, perhaps something about chemistry?

That book is shown in a couple of different places. Namely, Walt's bedside table and outside the shower. It moves around. It's no stretch of the imagination to assume that, some time between when we see Walt showering and when Hank finds it, Walt took the book with him into the guest bathroom.

I think we see the book and Walt in the guest bathroom, earlier in the series, as Walt cleans up from disposing of Mike.

Gale basically gave a shout-out to Walter White at the beginning of his notebook, but it was ambiguous enough for Walt to play it off like Gale was referring to Walt Whitman.

The beauty of Hank's realization is that it comes only after he has had several very important experiences. First, he suspects Fring, who then dies. Hank's boss then notes how easy it was for Fring to hide in plain sight. It's only after all the events of seasons 4 and 5 that Hank has the information he needs for his brain to click.

Yes, thanks for that clip, it's so clever how the writers planted that so far back, how Walt explained it away. This is a really fantastic show, it's been consistently great from the beginning and I am very excited to watch the final 8 epsiodes. Can you imagine what's going through Hank's head as he realizes that his meth king is his b-in-law? The pain he's suffered is thanks to Walt, the stress on his family and his rehab expenses...Walt. How the hell is Hank not going to come yelling out of the bathroom, going after Walt?

I didn't know what "breaking bad" meant either, but given this sentence it explains it to be straightforward extension of this sentiment. That something is going to break badly under certain circumstances, seems like a normal English sentence and I don't live in New Mexico, the United States or anywhere that talks about cancer or meth when using these words.

So Walt's watch that ticks past 51 before fading to black was resting atop the same Whitman book. Neat.

Thought I'd share this; pretty funny although possibly spoilerish if you're not caught up to date with the show yet.

OMG, just finished the last episode of season 4 and I don't think I've so thoroughly enjoyed a tv series...like EVER. I think I watched every single episode in under a month (via Netflix). This show totally deserves the praise. DAMN.

EDIT: FUCK, there's a season 5!? Damn it Netflix!

Really, none of you guys ever heard that expression before?
I remember hearing it in high school back in the 80's.
    "You breakin' bad wit me?"

I know, right? Five seasons of the Wire and it's like we forget all the slang that's ever come before.

I did what you did a while back and decided that I could not wait while season 5 started going live. You can get them, episode by episode from Amazon Instant. Other venues as well probably. Money well spent in my opinion.

And they've shown the first eight episodes of season 5 to this point; the final eight are not coming until next spring I think.

In a forum far, far away...

    Star Bad? Breaking Wars?

It is a little slow to start but around page 2 it really begins to cook.

Hmm. Might have been better to just link it to the Photoshop Phriday part. Either way.
