Was there ever a sequel to Merchant Prince.

I was cleaning out an old box and happened upon a squished stiffy containing The Merchant Prince (Pirated I'm ashamed to say.) and I got huge nostalgia pains since I really, really got a huge amount of joy out of that game. Was there ever a sequel and was it any good?

Machiavelli: the Prince. There was a Merchant Prince 2 released in 2001, but it was basically a repackaged Merchant Prince with few actual changes, and was probably only put out because of Holistic's legal problems with Ripcord over Noble Armada.

What is a "squished stiffy" and why does Merchant Prince have something to do with that? Do tell.

IIRC, wasn't Machiavelli: the Prince pretty much exactly the same game with (slightly) better graphics and new music? There was also another "sequel" that came out in 2001: Merchant Prince II. And it was yet another repackaging of exactly the same game, only with better graphics.

So no, there was never a real sequel.

I guess Ben has me on Ignore. What a jerk. Machiavelli only came out a couple of years after Merchant Prince, and it was actually a pretty big improvement. MP 2 was not.

No, I don't have you on ignore--I just somehow managed to totally not see your post. It's been a long time since I played Machiavelli, but I don't remember it being all that different.

This isn't complicated. A stiffy is an erection, and Brendan clearly has unusually disturbed preferences in sensation.

In fact, I'm still pissed that I bought MP 2.

The tech tree of worship is neat.

Hammer of the Gods is from the same developer. It's more Civ-style combat-oriented, and it's no Master of Magic, but you might like it anyway.

The original Prince game was my introduction to Pope-based gameplay mechanics.

Machiavelli was published by MicroProse and was fairly buggy from what I remember, in a time when every MPS title was fairly buggy. I don't think it was much of an improvement mechanically from Merchant Prince. Then it got repackaged in their Gold collection series ($20 titles) IIRC.. or was it Classics or some low-budget series. Something like that.

Machiavelli ruled. I picked it up on a whim just because I'd recently read The Prince and loved it.

It was a bit buggy, though. I remember I got elected to be the leader of the army and somehow my budget got glitched so that I was making so much money that even if I hired every single mercenary company in the world, I still wasn't using 50% of it. Which didn't bother me that much, since I was busy conquering the world with my mercenary hordes.

Oh yeah, I remember it also came with a paperback copy of Machiavelli. That was nifty.
