Free Xbox Live Game for Downtime

    Dear Xbox LIVE Members:

During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.

At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.

Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!

    Sincerely,

    Marc Whitten
    General Manager, Xbox LIVE

    As seen on Major Nelson.

    Not bad.

    Yay, Joust. (I'm predicting)

Actually, the only way that would really work without pissing people off is if they give away something new.

I doubt that - they probably would have phrased it that way already, if this was the case. I'm sure it'll be a selection of certain titles.

It will probably be a title I already have. And info "in the coming weeks"?
How long can it take for them to decide what to give us? Not that I care,
anyway. I really wanted my 13-day holiday back :/

My prediction: a special Live-problem-themed version of Frogger.

I also would suggest that they use wording similar to this:
"While we are giving you a free game of your choice, it will be a game of our choice."

I think giving everyone 800 or maybe 1200 MS points would have been better so that we could buy the game of OUR choice rather than some crap no one was going to buy anyway.

Why? What kind of outages were you experiencing? You don't play online anyways...

Didn't it also block the marketplace?

Because I want something for nothing, damnit. Actually, it did keep me from downloading some demos, etc. Hardly life threatening, but still...

You want something free from a service for which you're not even paying...? Pass the doobie after you've had your drag.

Yep, marketplace was broken, and some people even accidentally paid for their previous purchases
because the system somehow didn't remember that gamertag had bought it.

Shut the fuck up. We deserve a little sumthin'. This outage, it's caused me considerable emotional distress, and made me think twice about ever paying for Live in the future. It's called XBL's structural integrity into question and I need a free game to even begin thinking about being coaxed back into the fold!

They paid for the 360. Part of it's features is the online component.

It's not that unusual. I don't pay for a Guild Wars subscription yet I've got lots of free gifts from them.

I think we've moved out of joint territory and are completely in the realm of freebasing Moroccan hash. Pass the knives!

I spent a long time trying to buy an arcade game during the outage and I am a Silver member. I deserve free stuff dammit!

Also, this weakens my desire to upgrade to Gold.

edit: This being the outages, not the free game.
