    Best next gen Skating game?

Yesterday I finally had a chance to try out Skate on the PS3 and while I have a 360 it got me in the mood for a great skateboarding game. The last game I played was the last gen of project 8 which was horrible. My experience with next gen is about 30 minutes of project 8 and around the same time with Skate. I heard that the new Tony Hawk game wasn't as good. I'm not looking for multiplayer , so which one would be good?

Which half hour did you prefer - Project 8 or Skate?

skate is the by-far superior game to the new TH game.

I like Skate, but I suck at it due to years of holding down the A button to go fast and to ollie. I just don't have the patience to re-learn how to skate in a game. Even if you haven't been programmed by years of Tony Hawk games, Skate is a really hard game with a steep learning curve, which makes small improvements seem amazing. It is really rewarding in that way. If I could jump into it without having to fight my Tony Hawk instincts, I'd love it.

That said, there's nothing wrong with Project 8. I loved it (one 360). No idea if the new TH is a vast improvement over P8, but I doubt it is. You can get P8 pretty cheap now.

Skate is tons of fun. I haven't played whatever the new Tony Hawk game is, but I played the one before that and it sucked. So, get Skate.

My brother has major wood for Skate. The boy is obsessed with skating and skate games (as in we've got them all), and he seems to think that Skate is the second coming of Christ (the first coming, of course, being TH1).

He also mentioned it being fairly difficult to pick up, as it broke a lot of the TH conventions in a good way. Plus, we don't own a next gen system yet since we're still waiting for that big price drop everyone swears is coming, so he can't just plop down in front of it and go Zen mode.

Considering he routinely got millions of points on combos in the TH games, and that he's been a devoted fan for, what, a decade now?, and has no plans to get TH8 after demoing it, I'd say that's a ringing endorsement.

Same thing here. I own and love every TH game (excluding Project 8 which I just haven't bought yet, and the brand new one). GMicek brought Skate over one day since he had it from Gamefly and after about a half hour of forcing myself to try it... it was awesome. I really really liked it and I swear I thought I would hate it.

Don't get me wrong, I still loves me some TH. But try it again my friend. You owe it to yourself.

I have tried, I spent a good tow hours on the demo and couldn't even ollie reliably. It's just frustrating. And I have no accuracy on the right analog - I'm always off a bit which translates to a huge error in the game. I might pick it up later when I can find a cheap used copy, but I can't see spending $60 only to end up crying later in the month screaming "I just can't do it!" which tears streaming down my face.

If you liked previous Tony Hawk games, you really can't go wrong with Proving Ground. It's biggest drawback is that it's largely more of the same, but if you happen to like that, then it isn't really a drawback.

That said, Skate is a great game on its own merits and as other mentions quite rewarding when you actually pull of a new movie, although a bit frustrating until that point.

If he hasn't played P8, is there any reason to play Proving Ground? Is there any huge improvements or anything? Because you can find P8 really cheap now.

Depends on how much he wants the video editing and rigging features. They are probably the biggest selling points, but I'd also consider the more fleshed out career mode and the ability to Nail The Trick in multiplayer is neat.

I'd probably get Project 8 for $20 or so but since he hasn't bought Project 8, I would probably just dive into Proving Ground.

Skate all the way (do we have to spell it in lower case with the trailing period?), and I've been a TH player since the day the demo arrived for the PS1.

Skate's controls are just so damn fluid and refreshing compared to the button mashing that is the TH series, although I have to confess that when I'm a bit tired I sortof revert to my ingrained button mashing ways.

It should probably win this years award for "Best New Game That Will Inevitably Become a Franchise".

I've never picked up a TH game due to the perception of it being button mashing, and I'm enthralled with Skate.

That of course could be a negative to a long-time TH player, but to me it Just Makes Sense (TM)!

Does Proving Ground have the same mechanic from project 8 that each challenge has an easy, medium, sick, goal or is it more similar to previous ones?

With skate I was using the PS3 controller and I did have a hard time getting it to understand the different ollie tricks (move stick back then up and to the right , for example and any of the manuals.) What kind of challenges are in Skate further in? The time I spent playing it was in the demo skate park. I spent my 30 minutes with that just getting used to the new control scheme.

I would absolutely recommend skate as a game for anyone who digs the art of skateboarding. If you can watch a skateboarding video and enjoy it, then skate's the game for you. I admit, though, that the career mode starts to get a bit repetitive; it essentially devolves into just trying to score as many points as possible anyway. It's definitely a ton of fun to find some crazy new line -- like doing a leap of faith off the side of a bridge in hopes of landing on the rail nearby.

Skate has various challenges, most of them consisting of getting a set of points in various locations, usually with the technique left up to you.

The ones that suck the fun out of the game are the precise repetition challenges, but fortunately there's only a handful of those (I'm ignoring the S.K.A.T.E. challenges which fully consist of repetition, they don't seem required to complete the game). I just don't have the thumbstick precision (nor interest) to learn how to do a 360 Backwards 360 or whatever, on command.

I recommend watching some goonskate (and that's one of mine) to get a feel for the game.

skate. is pretty much the best skateboarding game ever. I used to really like Tony Hawk but after the 30 minute demo I was sold, went out and preordered the game, and then picked it up at 10 when EB opened. Of course when I got home my girlfriend stole it from me and proceeded to play for six hours straight.

It pretty much revolutionized the skateboarding game format and I can't imagine the people over at Activision are too thrilled about that.

skate, without a doubt. I have never enjoyed any sports based video games aside from a few rounds of Virtua Tennis, and I have absolutely loathed skating games since I first played TH on a Dreamcast. I fucking love this game, and everyone I have seen play through the demo comes away with the same kind of excitement. The level of feedback is so satisfying, it eases the steep learning curve for me substantially, even when I have to repeat moves it's no big deal. I'm planning on picking it up asap, bonus being the casual gamers who stop by my house have fallen in love with it.

skate. also has the PERFECT demo. It's able to convey exactly what the whole premise of the flickit controls are and you're able to make a very quick call regarding the controls and their suitability for you're style of play (you can also leave the Community Centre through an exploit and explore a lot more of the city, if you so desire).

The Sports Anomaly guys (specifically Bryan Intihar, I believe) talked about the EA acceptance speech at the *cough*Spike*cough* awards (skate. won "Best Individual Sports Game") and the dig they made at Neversoft - anyone know where this might be found on the internets?

I gave the Skate demo another shot last night, spent a bit more time getting accustomed to the flick controls. I'm getting better at tapping A/X and then quickly moving my thumb to the right analog, but then I kinda get stuck. I pull back fine, and then I have to think "flick up and to the right," or else I just let it go. Also, I have no accuracy when trying to do tricks. Every time I try to do a kick flip, I either just do an ollie, or I pop shove-it. And my poor thumb! I can't think of any game that makes you flick up on the analog like that constantly, I'll used to rolling it around I guess.

The controls for skate will eventually just click. For the longest time all I could do was random stuff, but after a few hours I could reliably do laser flips and nollie 360 flips on demand.

It really is amazing how EA of all companies totally punked Activision this year. I remember reading an interview on Proving Ground and Neversoft was like, "we'd rather be us than them", "we've tried a lot of things over the years and we know what works and what doesn't", "EA has tried to beat us before and their game sucked", etc. So EA comes out with this beautiful elegant game and makes Tony Hawk look old and stodgy. Who could've predicted that?

Neversoft in particular is getting showed up pretty hard, what with that and Rock Band as well. I'd be surprised if either EA-published game outsold its ATVI-published rival, but there's no question which ones are appreciated more by gamers who have played both.

I was at Target today and the 360 version of Proving Ground was on clearance for $30 or so. They had at least two dozen copies.

    Go Skate!
