Would be a sad day for those of us who aren't lucky enough to have a Fry's around. :(

Of course, they closed every CompUSA within 20 miles of me already, so I suppose it's less of a loss than it could be. Yay Internet!

That sucks. The CompUSA here in Madison always has a pretty decent selection of PC games at reasonable prices, I always go there first when I'm looking to pick something up. Circuit City enjoys keeping the price of PC games at $50 no matter how old the game is, and the selection at Best Buy continues to worsen. Target is okay, but the selection is small. I'll only go into a Gamestop as my absolute last resort. I may have to start buying more games off Amazon. Sucks.

I used to work for the Allston, MA CompUSA back in the late 90's up until mid-2000. It was pretty bittersweet to see it close, but somehow I saw it coming even back then.

When they shut down the one here in Tacoma, WA, there was not a bargain to be found unfortunately, but maybe with an entire chain being shut down and not just a few stores, more deals will be had.

Yeah if you have the experience of working there for any length of time you could tell the company wouldn't last long.

My local CompUSA has been an increasingly shitty store for years now. Maybe others are different, but just based on my experience, I'm not surprised to see them go under.

I used to think the CC by me was like that, until I discovered that the employees were just too lazy to be bothered changing the price stickers, so games that had $49.99 on the box were ringing up $12.99 at the register. Circuit City is a chain, thus the price on anything there should be chain-wide. If you see it on their website for $20, it's $20 no matter what the box says.

I had a field day when Media Play went out of business. They did the liquidation thing, with deeper discounts the longer it went on. I went in on the final weekend when everything was no less than 90% off and picked up a couple of games and a bunch of strategy guides for literally $0.50 each.

With CompUSA I doubt they'll go the liquidation route though. Likely they'll try to unload most of the inventory to wholesalers and other retailers, then have a month of "Store Closing" sales with lame 10% discounts on stuff they marked up 20% before discounting it.

When they closed the first half of the stores they did have a liquidator come in to get rid of the inventory, but they didn't really reduce prices very much from my understanding. I'm sure they'll do the same thing.

I always thought of it as the place I go if I need something today and am willing to be screwed on the price. I have never even gotten a normal deal there, much less a good one. I remember needing a new video card to play City of Heroes properly and I wanted it THAT day. I checked online and it was $150 at Newegg. At CompUSA it was $300. I couldn't justify THAT. So I had to wait a few days.

That is correct. Those idiots can't even go out of business right.

Exactly. The only thing that would make this good would be if they replaced that CompUSA with a Frys.

I've actually gotten a good deal on PSUs there before. Every once in a while they'll have some 50-60% sale which will bring prices down to near-internet prices, with the convenience of being able to get the part right away.

I have never been... I usually buy most of my PC games off of steam, and sometimes I go to the west side BB.

Hah, I never knew you worked for the evil ones also, DP. I used to work at the Pleasanton, CA one around the same time period, and had the same feeling about it.

I would be celebrating the bargains, but CompUSA pulled up stakes and got the fuck out of the Detroit area this past year during the "rightsizing." They went from 1 store in the area, added 1 around 2001, added 2 within a year in 2005, and then next thing you know, all 4 are closing down in 2006.

The only store left in Michigan is in fucking Lansing, which pisses me off because Metro-Detroit is by far a larger market. From what I understand from employees, Lansing wasn't even the store with the best numbers, so it's not like they were picking the one that was the most successful.

With incompetance like that, news of their (supposed) impending demise is not shocking in the least.

Anybody remember when CompUSA was Softwarehouse (late 80's and early 90's)? They weren't so bad in my memory. Aisles and stacks of boxes containing bare parts of all description (motherboards, PSUs, disks, video cards, etc). Was very good for the build-it-yourself type. Not much polish or hype.

By the end here in Atlanta last year, they had tried to turn themselves into some kind of Best-Buy imitation big box store.

Not sad to see them go now...

    Man, cold hearted bastards.

I'll have some fond memories. Finding Civ II on the shelfs weeks before it was expected was one. Spending an hour debating the Gravis Ultrasound before plopping down for it. When Egghead died, CompUSA was the only place that had serious computer hardware and software.

I like it when closing stores sell their fixtures.... like a giant whiteboard for $20
