Me personally, 1) Japanese battle flag, 2) Red China flag, 3) Soviet Union flag.

In my family, 1) and 2) would probably alternate depending on the person.

I don't find Confederate battle flags offensive either... I just find them emblems of a fascinating piece of history. (Though I can imagine people being offended by them being flown in certain contexts.)

No, the Eye of Sauron looks a lot more like a vagina on fire.

    Statistics make everything better.

    Who Wins The Killing Fields?

    The Crusades (1095-1272) : 1m
    Cathar Heresy (1208-1249): 200k
    Mongol Hordes (1206-1353): 30m
    African Slavery (1451-1870): 17m
Spanish Inquisition (1481-1610): 350k (nobody expected it)
    American Indian Pacification (1500-1870): 14m
    Thirty Years War (1618-1648): 5.7m
    French Revolution (1793-1794): 263k
    Taiping Rebellion, China (1859-1864): 12m
    American Civil War (1861-1865): 970k
The Rape of the Belgian Congo (1885-1908): 10m
    Mexican Civil War (1900-1920): 1.4m
    World War 1 (1914-1918): 20m
    Russian Civil War (1917-1924): 4m

Past this, thanks to the resolution of history, we can actually drill down into individual leaders!

    Joseph Stalin (1924-1953): 43m
    Adolf Hitler (1933-1945): 20m
Hideki Tojo (1941-1945): 4m (does not include pre-1941 genocide of China, 17m)
    Chiang Kaishek (1921-1949): 10m
    Kim Il Sung (1948-1987): 1.5m
    Mao Zedong (1949-1976): 77m
    Pol Pot (1968-1987): 2m

    (Source: Death by Government)

So, clearly, by the numbers, the winner?

    But with an honorable mention:

And let's not forget Most Scrappy, killing 30 million back when they had to do it all by hand: MONGOLIA!

And from out of nowhere, the Most Surprising goes to: Belgium! Let's hear it for King Leopold, for the genocide no one cares about because it's in Africa!

I thought the death toll of the ACW was pegged at 600k. Where did the other 370,000 deaths come from?

And the only person we only truly demonize is Hitler? Based on numbers alone, he only makes #3.

The guy's statistics contradict his "HOW MANY DID COMMUNIST REGIMES MURDER?" article.

Oh, I get it. The PRC are actually responsible for 77mm murders. Mao himself is about 35mm.

    Civilians.

#4, below Mongolia, who, lest we forget, did it all with scimitars and bonfires.

Amazingly, Communists don't publish regular reports on death tolls from gulags. Much of the discrepancy is due to whether various famines and other death sources (Holodomor, Great Leap Forward, etc) count as government-inflicted or not. Regardless, everyone agrees Mao and Stalin are #1 and #2.

Are the Native American numbers just the United States? I was just curious, and I've heard that even just those numbers are in dispute due to the fact that nobody really knows how many native americans were here before the europeans got here., and prolly don't include the various deaths by disease.

So the ranking for invididuals should be:

    Stalin: 43mm
    Mao: 35mm
    Hitler: 20mm

The various political groups should be:

    PRC: 77mm
    USSR: 61mm
    Nazi: 20mm

How sad. Little Kim Il Sung just isn't a contender. He tried so hard, too. Let this be a lesson: take over a populous country if you want to top the lists.

It doesn't matter, nobody could possibly find the American flag offensive.

That's kind of a moving target from what I can tell in the article. As long as disease was sanctioned by the government as a way to kill people, it's democide. So, if the government told people to sell blankets riddled with disease to the American Indians, that should be included. But if it was disease as a result of war, then it should be excluded.

Interesting that Great Britain isn't listed... Oops, wait. Sorry, they're near the bottom.

The American Civil War led to almost 400,000 civilian deaths? I know the South was ravaged economically, but this statistic surprises me. It's not like they were dropping bombs on cities. I thought Sherman's March, for instance, led to enormous loss of property but relatively little actual civilian death. Where did all these people die... Atlanta? Richmond? Vicksburg?

I wasn't finding it offensive, it's just that there's a lot of natives in both north and south america, and they're not totally sure of the complete numbers of natives that died due to spanish, portugese, english, russian, etc etc.

Also, to a lesser extent, cheap unassembled furniture and caffeine addiction.

I'm disgusted by your total lack of sensitivity with regards to Viking raids and the Norman conquest. The Tre Kronor is an offensive symbol of crimes against humanity including, but not limited to, slavery, rape, and fermented fish products.
