    PC power-on failure

I'm currently trying to boot up my new PC without success. Does anyone have ideas what could cause the following:

    Motherboard led is on
When pressing power button, fans start running, harddisk starts spinning
The fans run for about 5 seconds, then everything shuts down
After a second or so, the fans and HD start up again and stay on

No beeps at any point, and no video output.

Faulty PSU maybe? Is there any way to diagnose this further without getting spare parts like a new PSU?

Start by unplugging everything, INCLUDING PCI cards etc., then try to power on with just CPU+one stick of RAM.
Listen for any beep patterns of more than one beep. One beep = OK, anything else is an error code.
If it's still shutting down immediately, the PSU is the likely culprit.

Found it. The culprit was the front-panel USB ports for some reason. Leaving them unplugged makes the machine boot OK. This is the first time I've ever encountered something like that.

Wow, you know... now that I think about it, that might be the same problem with mine.

    Wouldn't that be fucked up.

What motherboard do you have? What case?

If this is actually a cause of my problems, I'm going to flip the fuck out.

Also, I'll have to sell the 3 extra 450W power supplies I now have lying around.

    Indeed.

Well, i'm going to try never putting anything in my front USB ports, and turn my computer off at night until I get the problem again. If I don't get the problem again, then I'm going to write Antec/Asus a nasty mail and tell them to get their shit in gear. There's no reason why using the front USB ports should prevent a machine from booting properly. There must be a flaw in the design somewhere.

there's no 'flaw' in the case or the mobo so you may want to not write that misdirected letter. it has to do with how you've positioned the mobo when installing it so as to cause the short.

I'm pretty sure my setup doesn't have anything shorted on the mobo. How would that explain that connecting the extra USB in the back panel works, but connecting the front panel USBs make the system unbootable? However, I noticed that the Antec and Asus USB connectors seem to have a different number of wires going into them, so maybe they use different kind of pin configuration.

I've been hit by non-standard USB configurations before. I thought that was standardised properly years ago, though.

Um, what? My motherboard is positioned on the only holes that it lines up properly with, using proper spacers, and if there was a short on the motherboard, it would *never* boot up.

edit: Although I realize now that perhaps I misread the thread. I only *sometimes* experience the symptoms in the OP.

I'm using the front USB connectors on my Asus P5B-E regularly without any issues. I suspect a problem with the cable or connectors that came with your case.
