Instarespawn is definitely lame, and I agree with the removal. Delayed response allows for a better offensive or defensive effort to have a real effect, and prevents the rapid "spawndiespawndiespawndie" cycle that leads to player frustrations.

Althought spawndiewaitspawndiewaitspawndiewaitspawndiewait.. . gets pretty damn frustrating too. Had that playing dustbowl on a (very poor, to be sure) team last night, and it brought back horrible flashbacks of TFC grenade spam. Miserable.

I let my 6-year old watch me play for a few minutes today, and he's been shooting people up with his blocks since (and warning his imaginary teammates of the soldier in the tunnels). Damn, they're impressionable.

    Edit: Now he's killing "turrents".

I've avoided the server-side mods, so far, but there's some really excellent usermade maps out.. Check out ctf_turbine_v3, cp_castle, ctf_wall_b2 and ctf_funhouse. FPS Banana has screenshots, etc.

What's not so cool is getting saddled with a class which has clear disadvantages in melee, like sniper or engineer (although I don't think engineer is included). I hope that the algorithim used gives each team the same type and number of classes rather than just doling them out randomly on an individual basis.

edit: Also, I wish there was a voice chat command for "Get on the point" that didn't require me to be personally standing n the point looking at someone. There's a bunch of nice comments with just the right amount of snark, and it's a shame they don't get any play.

"Must I capture zis point myself?"

I can imagine the Soldier having a good "Get on the fucking cap, morons" emote.

    The Spy should use sarcasm.

So last night I tried to get on the Qt3 server. It had empty spots, and as I was connecting I got kicked for "spot reserved" or somesuch.

Do I need to learn the sooper sekrit handshake?

You misunderstood me. In addition to the ordinary "Help me capture this point" and "Help me Defend", there ARE voice clips like like that for every class. For example the soldier goes "STAND. ON. THE. POINT. NUMBNUTS!" but you have to be looking at someone while standing on the point and calling for help. I'd much prefer to be able to shout "Get on the point!" from anywhere at any time, rather than "Help!", which doesn't tell you much unless you're right next to me.

You actually just need to be standing on the point and it will change depending on if you are defending or capping.

I actually wish Ubercharge Ready had a textual thing. In the heat of battle I can quite understand the class I'm healing not noticing the bar being full, and not hearing the tiny Medic voice behind all the explosions saying it. Might have to set up a keybind for teamsaying that, because it's a pain in the ass to be shouting MY UBERCHARGE IS READY while whoever I'm healing is cowering behind a wall, occasionally shooting out, and entirely refusing to go outside.

I'm going to assume it's that they don't realise it's ready, rather than they're waiting for me to use it before they go outside. Unless they instantly die they'll be at full health once it's gone, and will have more time for shooting before it runs out anyway.

Think someone with initiative can schedule an east-coast US friendly couple times a week or so. Late people (california) can join in to replace east coasters going to sleep at a reasonable hour of 10-11 PM EST.

Mike is very useful for a doktor. He can call for a pyro to uber. It makes sure they are ready, they can peek to see where they'll rush, and the rest of the team. It also weeds out the frustrating "pyro wastes 30% of the uber standing around deal"

BTW is there a way to filter out ALL_CHAT servers? They always seem to be predominantly trash-talk, "uRRR GAY!"

I think so. But you need a sledgehammer and the willingness to never see the internet again.

Zing! Very nice, but you may misunderstand. I don't mind chatter within my own team. It's hearing the Smurf team chatter that bothers me. "HOHO did u see that i s*#^*#$& ur butt!!!!"

Alas, for that I don't have an answer. At least it's very easy to mute voices, but there's a certain amount of whiny/prepubescent angry text that is unavoidable most of the time. Exception for awesome QT3 server playing, of course.

Even tactically important team-only discussion is too much for me - every time TF2 forgets my preference to mute all voice chat (about once a week) I physically recoil at the disgusting sounds gurgling out of my speakers. I know it's not unique to TF2, but there is something badly wrong with these people. Most players appear to be half-human heaps of malconnected organs barely capable of dribbling into their microphones, let alone articulate speech.

One of the things I like about TF2 is that I often end up really liking some people on my team, even strangers or people I'm not usually wild about. Voice chat shatters that.

I had a girl on my team once constantly calling "Medic, medic, why aren't you healing me". After a few minutes I realized its a little kid. Then I felt old.

    Engineer question

I saw someone mentioned this - how do I bind the construction commands directly to the keyboard? These commands aren't in the binding menu (where they should be).

Take it one step further and give us a "blacklist" similar to how favorites work so we can avoid going to those servers ever again.

I'm tired of server ops who have reserved slots & aren't configuring them properly (so you can't wait to join)

I'm tired of the extra 2meg download of new taunts / music / porn. just gimme the level ffs and let me play.

Just bring down the console and bind a key to "build 0" or "destroy 3" etc. The numbers are 0-3, and in the same order as they appear on the build-o-tron. So:

    bind 1 "build 0"

I have it so that my weapon shortcuts are on large, separated keys like Alt, Caps Lock and Ctrl, then I have number keys 1-4 set to build stuff, and 7-0 to destroy it. That makes sense because of the big split in my natural keyboard between 6 and 7, but it'd also be good to use 1-4 on the numpad for destroy commands, or even F1-F4.

I also have the number keys double-bound to the Spy disguises, so 1 is bound to "build 1; disguise 1 1"

For what it's worth, I've found that if you go to a random pubbie server and join a team where nobody's using voice, the team likely sucks. Better teams do use voice.

Good voice discipline is a learned skill, IMO, and not a particularly common one at that.

Amen. When we released Roger Wilco, the biggest 'issue' we had (after some certain unlabeled sub-variants of Crystal sound cards) was people coming to terms with the need for comms discipline, which was aggravated by feedback from loud speakers and over sensitive mics.

Instant and Fast Respawn servers must die! (or at least be clearly labeled so). What methhead speedfreak ADDHD crackbaby thought this was a good idea in the first place? I wish there were columns in the server list for this stuff. And a column for servers where people who understand the basics of teamwork and general game dynamics, such as knowing when to turtle and when to sacrifice yourself for the good of the push.

Also, Lazytown: when you just can't be bothered to make a map that is fun. Or: Lazytown: For when the "Figure 8" standard pattern of multi-player FPS maps isn't obvious enough.

Is it just me, or does it seem like enemy pyro's flame jet has a much greater range when they're running forward, but mine is useless (this is really: Is my "flame panic" level above average?).

I almost wish some maps had a player population threshold , because some times, even 6 on 6 on a map is a ghost town.

I agree. I am always happy to see someone using voice on a team I've just joined.

Granted, part of that might be because players on asian servers tend to have teamwork down a lot better, so it's not like xbox live where everyone is listing off all the dirty words they know and arguing with their mom. There's usually only 1 or 2 people on a team using voice, and they're directing the team which point to head for or telling an engineer to move up the teleport.

Okay.. someone please tell me... Why on earth are dead players not allowed to talk to the living? It needlessly makes vent a requirement for league play.

Because I can't count how many times I've died and have been treated to an image of an enemy spy disguising or running around with my name. They need their privacy.

Because dead players can left click through each member of their team and warn them of dangers. You're dead, ruminate on why you suck and come back better. The game is not designed for you to be your teams all seeing ghost commander.
