When the fuck did Natalie Imbruglia learn to sing?

Saw my niece watching THIS video yesterday:

Maybe if she'd had songs like that all along she wouldn't have faded past obscurity. Wow. Great song/video.

I consider NI a guilty pleasure of mine. She's got some some cool acoustic-laced tunes sprinked across her various albums.

Can't say I really like that song, tho. It kinda falls into the realm of cheese that a lot of her other stuff manages to avoid.

Yeah, I don't care for the song itself, but Natalie could always sing. I never understood why people criticized her for an inability to sing.

Sounds like the theme song to the next 'Dawsons-Tree-Party-of-One-on-the-Five-Creek-Hills' coming this Fall on the CW!

So....it's got that going for it.

Her first US hit (were there more?) was the type of song that is so manufactured - simple lyrics, lots of repetition, guitar players strumming a progression of 3 chords in the background, drummer on autopilot - the kind of song that's popped off the assembly line - that it felt to me like she was just another good singer who was being packaged for the pop market. Yeah, she sounded good in the song, but it wasn't really singing, if you get my drift.

So I guess my impression of her was that her handlers were trying to make her into a pop star through media/packaging as opposed to her being a great talent that people noticed.

"Torn" was a cover, IIRC -- if it was manufactured, it was manufactured for/by Ednaswap. Not a bad song IMO, and I thought Natalie sang it all right, though her voice is a little thin.

"Torn" is a magnificently simple and altogether wonderful bit of cotton candy. I love that song, and love Imbruglia's version of it.

    I'm a fan.

I never liked any of her earlier stuff--I could have cheerfully given the CD Left of the Middle the microwave sendoff--but this is cool. Nice and catchy, with a nice beat.

The kind of song that has what I call "American Bandstand Disease". Anyone remember Rate-A-Record from American Bandstand? Invariably, when Dick Clark would ask the kids what they think of the song, they'd say "it has a nice beat, and it's easy to dance to." Not everything has to have some deep meaning :).

Torn was written by the lead singer of 4 Non Blondes, I think. She has an acoustic version of it out there. I seem to remember she wasn't very happy with the new rendition.

I agree. It's nearly perfect Pop.

For real. I always thought she had a great voice. I just didn't like the alt-indie-acoustic thing or whatever she had going.

I don't like her voice in that youtube clip.

I actually didn't mind Torn (thought it was just generic music, not really great or terrible).

Ah. I thought it was a Melissa Etheridge song. Doesn't mean she wrote it, though.

Actually, Torn was originally written for Norwegian artist Trine Rein by Scott Cutler, Anne Previn and Phil Thornally. It was a moderate hit in Norway, Denmark and Japan but it didn't turn her into a superstar as expected.

Edit: Hm, Wikipedia says Ednaswap. Some further research suggests that Scott Cutler, Anne Previn and Phil Thornally is Ednaswap. Jeez. Well, Trine Rein's official website has been lying to me, then.

Fun fact, though, Natalie is married to the lead singer of Silverchair. (Yes, that band that had the single hit and the lead singer was like 16 at the time. She is like 10 years his senior.)

Sounds just like her earlier songs. I don't get it.
