Yep. Forums just blew up, too. You'd think the whole thing would be like, "OK, open up the authentication servers," but I guess not.
Six minutes past the Steam release and it still says "unreleased" in my games list! UNACCEPTABLE!

"Open up the authentication servers. No, wider! WIDER! MORE LUBE!"
DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION IS THE FUTURE
It's almost as if the PHBs over at Take 2 sat down and said, "Okay, how can we botch the release of Bioshock even worse than Half-Life 2?"
But not the present.Originally Posted by Gary Whitta

Yeah, against my better judgement I went with Steam. It would be a real advantage for Digital Distribution if they could get 12:01 releases for high profile titles. No waiting in line and get to play it 12 hours early, but publisher contracts with brick and mortar is probably a problem. :(
Close client and reopen...looks like they just opened it up.
Have you tried closing and then restarting your Steam client? I had the same issue with the Civ4:BTS preload. The status of the game didn't update until I restarted the client... which is not the sort of behaviour I was expecting.
wtf I restarted and now it's not even in my games list any more...
There we go. I went to offline mode then back to online mode which didn't work. Exiting and restarting steam worked though. Thanks!Originally Posted by Lee Johnson
Edit: Yay. I forgot that with steam you have to finish downloading after you preload and unencrypt it. Ugh.

"Downloading...80%"
wtf, I thought that is why I left my computer on preloading all night
Guess Steam is just using my box as a pr0n zombie ftp server when I am "preloading"
and now...."Failed to contact key server"
THE LOL
Am I doing something wrong here? I pre-loaded but didn't pre-purchase yet. After I restarted Steam the game just disappeared from my list.
Steam is the Bear Gryllis of secure online content/software delivery and support.
There. That should summon Chet :)

Bricks and mortar FTW!
Mine finally got to 81%, but it took a while (at reasonable speeds, around 180 KB/S).Originally Posted by scharmers
So it looks like the thing wasn't ready after pre-load, and a significant amount of content has to be downloaded when the launch time hits. Which is fine if they didn't create the impression that Steam will let you "play it the instant it's activated" or whatever it was they said.
Yeah looks like they they held back 20% of the code, to prevent hacking?
Hey ya'll, don't get so steamed!
Probably would get a significant easing of the server load as well, since many folks would (quite sensibly) be asleep at that point. I can only assume that the 4pm start time was due to some sort of publisher/retailer agreement. Considering how Gamestop screws publishers with their pawn shop business, I'm surprised how much pull they seem to have in the Digital Distribution game.Originally Posted by Mordrak

Yeah. It's bogus. I've got about another hour until I can play at this point. >.<
So blame steam for my constant posting today while I whittle away the time.
Mine finished. After unloading/relaunching Steam a few times, it finally unlocked and it's fully installed now. They definitely held back with a sizable portion of the content before release.
Wait, are you saying you didn't buy the game?Originally Posted by Gary Whitta

Yeah, that's what he's saying. I bought mine this morning, but I started pre-loading several days ago.Originally Posted by Matthew Gallant

GOD I LOVE THE PC! NOT
Actually, I <3 my 360. This is seriously the first time I've felt like the 360 has a clear advantage over the PC. No driver problems + no Steam problems + no online authentication required = TEH WIN. Hooray for only one hardware platform!
(I'd feel differently if I didn't have a PC from 2004, no doubt, but even then I'd already concluded that I liked the 360 controller better for this game -- analog movement, left and right triggers, rumble, and slightly slower aiming all work really, really well for this particular experience.)
Steam fails... it's 1 hour and 1 minute after the game was "released" and I'm still only at 83%, downloading at 180 KB/s.
Completely unacceptable and misleading since the preloading clearly said "play as soon as released".
