Vista 2GB memory limit gaming hotfix

Vista causes many games to use significantly more memory, to the point that you run into the 32-bit 2 GB per process limit. This might have been what those rare crashes were in Supreme Commander for me.. it's some arcane DirectX thing where double-entry bookkeeping happens in Vista for some aspect of video memory:

KB940105 fixes this; I've installed it and I see a big improvement in return-to-desktop times for BF2142.

32-bit and 64-bit versions of the patch here:

Maybe there is something to this whole "wait for service pack 1" line of reasoning..

Heh, the first draft of my XP vs. Vista performance comparison I just wrote yesterday has a conclusion that reads:

.In the meantime, though, there’s no harm in non-early adopters waiting awhile longer to giving a second, post-Service Pack 1, look at Windows Vista.

Anywhere from later this year to sometime in 2009, depending on your preferred rumour mill.

Most likely it'll just be the beta this year and the final release in the first half of 2008.

Thanks for the heads up Wumpus. Of course, for some odd reason my Logitech mouse stopped working after this hotfix. Swapping USB ports fixed it. Just a lovely nuance of a Windows update.
