It's on the PC too? Oh thank god, I hate playing an FPS on console. Didn't remember seeing any info on it.

FY09? Yeah, I thought so. Oh well, it's not like there's going to be any shortage of happy gaming goodness late this year. Fallout 3 alone will consume my Q4. (Assuming it doesn't slip.....)

What was up with the guy commentating during that demonstration? He was far too excited about every single thing that happened in the game. It felt really pandering... he was giving me a petting zoo guide vibe. "Oh wow! Look at that! That goat just moved! Wooow! Woo! Oh man I LOVE that goat! Goats can be used for MILK too you know!"

And the whole dynamic generation of guns? I dunno... has dynamic generation of art ever given good results? I'd rather have 100 modeled guns than, what did he say? 500,000?

Also, the big draw of Autoduel was the strategic element of gun placement, protecting armor quadrants, tire blowouts, etc. The car combat in this looks like Interstate 82... just keep blasting away and eventually the car explodes.

I had really high hopes for this... and from what I've seen so far I'm becoming very reserved.

He didn't say 500,000 models, you can assume a number of basic models, the difference being the combo of attributes.

I meant 100 individually modeled- as in concepted, modeled and textured by an artist to look unique, as opposed to generating 1,000 parts and having them all slapped together willy-nilly by some algorithm.

Yes, and my point is where did he say that they'd have 1,000 parts slapped together willy nilly?

How else are you going to dynamically generate 3D models for 500,000 different guns?

    Magic?

Seriously, my bad, though the term they use is "procedurally generated", not "dynamically generated".

That said, if you look at the vid where he starts cheating and just spitting out weapons, all the ones I saw were pretty cool. I think the key word is "procedurally" generated. The narrator says that they have rules for the generation of the guns, which means the parts aren't thrown together at random or "willy nilly".

So I was wrong in thinking they weren't generated but you're wrong in thinking they're just thrown together. Let's call it even :)

Awesome. I found them in the 2036 catalog; Bollix on page 23 and the HD Tranny on page 26.

Aww yeah, loved Car Wars. Crazy fun, Interstate 76 is the only thing that came close.

As much as I loved I76, Autoduel was as close to Car Wars as I've ever played on the computer.

It looked like it had potential, but sadly happened during a period I had neither access to a computer nor the funds to fix that situation.

I blame myself for its demise.

I was sure the bump was news that the game was canceled.

Autoduel is definitely near the top of games I want to see remade. I submitted two items to Uncle Al's Catalog, that got printed in the second and third ones (orange and green covers) from back when I was doing lots of teenage Car Wars. So I have a huge soft spot for autoduelling.

Gearbox has a good shot at making a good game in this vein, so ROCK ON! My GI can't get here soon enough now :-D

No idea why I remember that.

People on other forums are having a fit over the change in art direction. I don't get it. Do people really get that invested in a game they haven't played that isn't even part of an established franchise?

I actually think I prefer the new art.

    O. M. F. G.

I don't know why you remember it either, but you sure as hell do remember it. I'd forgotten until just now. Cheers!

Isn't "cel shaded" the wrong way to characterize that art style? The Kotaku article keeps referring to it that way. It's really annoying.

Whatever. I think it looks really cool. It reminds me a little of Brom's artwork for Dark Sun back in the day.

If it's cel shaded it's cel shaded. 'Style' doesn't really come into it.

At least the art style now makes the game stand out a bit. I always thought it kind of got lost in the crowd before.

I remember a Game Developer postmortem on Crackdown that quoted the game's art lead as being really annoyed with the media's characterization of the artwork as cel shaded. He insisted that it wasn't, and had some other way to describe it.

Gearbox doesn't call it cel shading, they call it "concept style." The differences are in the level of detail they get into it, the way shadows are handled, and the way lines are drawn.

Ditto. The previous look was way too generic.

If that's representative of the game, I think it's going to look great.

Indeed. I can't have been the only one that always confused this game with id's Rage.
