Um. GW == Guild Wars?
**Edited for those who don't know GW**
I have read the Guild Wars 2 article from PC gamer, and various other preview articles on it and Guild Wars Eye of The North (G.W.E.N.). When I read the PC gamer article, I kinda got the impression that they have every intention of keeping GW1 open, when GW2 is released.
However, most of the articles I read now on GWEN, it seems like I hear a lot of its GW1's last hurrah...
So anyone heard any factual clarification on the state of GW1, when GW2 comes out in a few years? I for one am hoping it stays up, and don't see why they couldn't keep making expansions, not standalones, for GW1, once the second comes out, since some GW1 players aren't interested in playing a non-instanced world like GW2...And since GW2 would be FTP as well, I would think any additional income GW1 can bring in would help...
Please enlighten this sub 10 posting newbie!

Um. GW == Guild Wars?
Seconded.Originally Posted by JPR
I think the original poster should imagine how confusing that post is were the reader to not know what "GW" means.
who the fuck is GWEN and what does she have to with George Washington?
Aren't discussions about Gulf War 1&2 supposed to be in P&R?

When using an acronym the first time, spell the phrase out and follow it with the acronym in parentheses. Then you may use the acronym by itself.Originally Posted by tallanka
Guitar... Wero. Lycanthrope musical adventure.
There was an annoying little girl right at the beginning of Guild Wars named Gwen. Later on you find her handkerchief as a loot item but no obvious purpose. It seems like the expansion Guild Wars Eye of the North (GWEN) will continue the story of Gwen.Originally Posted by Angrycoder
And GW is awesome enough that it never needs to be spelled out! Next you guys will be asking "Whose MOM?".
Clearly he means Guitar Wolf. Of which I must protest any sequel. Sequels are zombies, who are among Guitar Wolf's natural enemies along with aliens.
Poor tallanka was probably under the impression that the average Qt3'er wasn't a complete gaming newbie. =-/
Isn't there a minimum number of units sold that you have to reach before you can use an acronym for a game?
We've had this discussion before. Not everyone know what every acronym means. Even people who are familiar with the topic.Originally Posted by Shadari
Poor poor GW who will never live up in popularity to it's older step cousin [WoW] which everybody immediately recognizes.
from what I've gathered:
- making gw1 chapters was getting very difficult to continue since they basically have to add new classes, re-balance the skills, and create new newbie content that spans from level 1-20.
- gwen is the first real expansion for lvl 20 toons only so no need to reinvent the wheel again creating tutorial areas, etc.
- they weren't forward thinking enough when architecting gw1. From what I've read there are features they would like to add that they just can't without starting over from scratch (what maybe like an actual auction house????!!!????, some shared quests vs all instanced quests, etc) so out comes gw2. My guess would be sometime in 2009 (beta in 2008 but these things always get delayed).
- If this was ea then all gw1 servers would be turned off by 2010 but this is ncsoft so who knows.
- Why we can't more fully transfer all our toons, loot, money, etc to gw2 I don't get. Ok we deposit a few greens into a slot at the end of gwen and we get "something" in gw2? If they more clearly defined what we could pass from gw1 to gw2 it would go a long way in preserving the current gw1 community. Right now I'm grinding away at game knowing it's death date.
- I'm guessing a last bit of popularity when gwen comes out and after that thing will get really quiet until gw2 comes out.
I'm pretty sure Guild Wars meets that criterion -- last I heard it was over 3 million (counting expansions, naturally.)Originally Posted by bigdruid
Aw phooey! I'm all but certain that Guild Wars has far exceeded the popularity of the old arcade game Wizard of Wor.Originally Posted by ARogan

It's a brand new engine. We know very little but it's almost assuredly using new combat mechanics and loot system. I don't know how you can carry over loot let alone a whole toon. And money will just mess up the economy and who knows if they keep prices similar to GW. It's like saying I want to transfer my EQ1(Erotic Queen 1) toon to EQ2.Originally Posted by ARogan

Shame on me for not knowing what GW was - I'm such a newb. Of course, when I see "SC2" I still think "Star Control 2", so there's not much hope for me anyway.
Edit: ARogan - I'm jealous. I had an Astrocade also, but never got a copy of Wizard of Wor as my local stores stopped selling the carts. I really wanted it, too...
Just in case anyone actually cares, here's some more recent data.Originally Posted by bigdruid
Yeah, and some people are too fucking dim to figure it out from the context. Or just want to give a new fish a hard time.Originally Posted by Squirrel Killer
Ok then maybe a way to value your account. When you start gw2, look at your gw1 account and all the toons, loot, money, etc. Figure up some formula and toss your starting gw2 toon a few nice green/gold weapons (sort of like pre order bonus weapons or collector's edition weapons). Some way to take all that gw1 effort and translate that to real benefit in gw2 and scales appropriately.
Funny, I don't remember people bitching that you couldn't start out at max level in EQ2 just cause you were a raider in EQ1.
Guild Wars: Eye of the north (which is the new expansion) will introduce a thing called the Hall of Monuments which will catalog your characters achievements in Guild Wars 1. When you create a character in Guild Wars 2 you will be able to associate a Guild Wars 1 characters achievements with the new character, resulting in some cool otherwise unobtainable stuff (we haven't finalized exactly what yet) for that character.
We have sold 3.5 million units across the franchise so far and are announcing a new larger number (take a guess as to what it is) soon. I hope that qualifies us for acronym status!
Read the original post again and tell us all what context is there. I'm fairly certain a post like this would be jumped on regardless of who made it.Originally Posted by metta

But seriously, I am sorry for the bad use of acronyms...I guess that is what I get for assuming everyone would know that GW in the Games Forums stood for Guild Wars...
I have edited some of the acronyms, so hopefully the post makes more sense to those who need clarification...
Now he says. Before it was just GWEN.Originally Posted by EFlannum
Yes, and it has been corrected, so can we talk about Guild Wars, and the upcoming Guild Wars 2, and not so much on how the Acronym GW should NEVER be assumed as Guild Wars in the Games Forums?Originally Posted by AndrewM
Before the post was edited to include the full title, all its talk of expansions and standalones, and a reference to an instanced world, was enough to make me think the author was writing about Guild Wars.Originally Posted by RobotPants
