THQ on Steam (CoH, Titan Quest)

Just saw the pop-up after running Steam.

    - Company of Heroes $27
    - Titan Quest $18
    - Titan Quest Exp $18 (both $26)

Now I wonder, I still have to buy Titan Quest Exp but I have the base game in its retail box. So could I buy the expansion from Steam and somewhat merge the two?

Don't know about Steam, but FWIW I have the TQ DVD and bought TQ Expansion from Direct2Drive and that combination seems to work okay.

I'd buy it from D2D if it wasn't for the usual:
This title is only available for purchase in North America.

Steam doesn't care where you live (and that's why I love it). Actually, I think D2D is the only DD service that restict non US residents. I've bought games from Steam, Stardock, Gamersgate and non of them has these restrictions (for the same games that D2D restricts). Matrix games also has no restrictions. Why is that?

Even though my backlog has grown to an unmanagable size, I'm thinking about caving and getting Company of Heroes off steam.

CoH is awesome. If you like RTSs you won't regret it, and even if you do, there's a decent change you'll like it (but try the demo first).

Now if only I could link my retail THQ game keys with Steam, and file away the install media for good.

Sometimes competing online distributors secure the rights to distribute to certain regions. It's all about what deal the publishers cut with the distributor. I've seen GamersGate restrict game to EU only, along with D2D being North America exclusive.

This is the first thing I checked. The answer is no.

That said, both the original game and the expansion for $26 sounds like a great deal. Anyone want to buy a copy of Titan Quest? :)

I guess its reasonable that the restriction isn't the online distributer idea. Hooray to Valve for securing global distribution rights.

This will almost certainly lead me to actually re-buy several titles. Steam is so much more convenient than retail distribution when it comes to reinstallation that I will probably be picking up several games I already own.

Yeah $26 sounds like a really good price. In fact, I think I saw the expansion itself for sale either this week or last for $26. As much as I like the fold outs showing all the powers, etc, the thought of just clicking once and getting it all... quite tempting.

Two questions though: If I have the retail version of TQ installed, would I lose my current characters (since they're tied to the old game key, aren't they?) and wouldn't I have to uninstall the DVD version?

I'm also looking at the Civ IV combo pack, but it sounds pretty expensive at $75 for Civ IV and the two expansions. Assuming the eventual Civ IV Gold pack comes out by, like Christmas, it'd be probably $50 for the whole thing, right? So I can rationalize this by pretending I purchased Civ IV and Warlords a while ago and I'm just buying Beyind the Sword right now. That works, right? Right??!?!!

Please pass on the info when you find out. I'd hope that Steam doesn't keep the same stranglehold on saved games that GameTap does. $26 is tempting. I don't mind unistalling and consequently selling my current copy. I just don't want to lose my saved games.

    Greetings:
We patched out the whole tie between characters and cd-keys at some point, so in theory that shouldn't be an issue, unless Steam does something weird with data files.

    Best,
    Michael.

Thanks for the note. Is there an easy way to check and get back to us? It'd be great if I didn't even have to move my saved games from the My Games folder.

Awesome news, Michael. You guys are a great company, I might buy this just because of that. :) Oh, and if you tell me what project you guys hired the head Warhammer Online designer for!

Can you "spawn" a second LAN computer from a Steam copy? Or do you need two copies to play co-op?

If it's because he couldn't suffer Mark Jacobs stepping over him, I wouldn't be surprised ;)

Hehe, maybe I hit close to home.

    Press release:
Iron Lore is also pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Marvin as Design Director. Steve most recently served as Senior and Lead Designer on Warhammer: Age of Reckoning at EA Mythic, and brings more than 10 years of games-industry experience to Iron Lore.
    Mark Jacobs:
Steve Marvin, while a great guy and a fine designer, had never been the lead designer of WAR, that's my job.

Actually I hate RTS. I just suck at them. Anyways I did by Company of Heroes this morning and it really is amazing. So far I've played the tutorials and thats it. Visually and presentation its stunning. I've read the raves before but I was surprised how nice it looks.

Hopefully I can play the single player missions without getting my ass handed to me left and right.

You probably will get your ass handed to you especially on a couple of early missions where you have a lot to learn. It's best if you go in knowing you may need (or even want) to play the mission several times.

For me the campaign was fun enough that this was no problem...I actually had to institute a "don't play on weeknights" rule for myself, because once I started a mission I just couldn't stop playing until I'd nailed it.

I'm considering getting the TQ expansion on steam - Just one question. Do the steam versions come with CD Keys, and if so, is there anything preventing me from installing the standard versions of the game with said CD keys?

(ie, could I buy the game, and then just install off a friend's expansion disc with the CD key?)

I love the concept of Steam, but I really don't like the idea of being chained to that client.

Since CoH lets you pause and issue orders, just take your time to scroll around the battlefield and decide your strategy. It should be relatively easy then.

Well I bought TQ and the expansion though it took some doing. For some reason Steam would not accept any of my credit cards. Not sure what the deal with that was but I finally had to break down and use paypal.

26 bucks is about what I wanted to pay for this game so this deal works out great!

The one thing I love about steam is that I dont have to worry about CD keys or even finding the CDs.

Well, tried downloading the CoH demo (yes, I know, I couldn't possibly be more late to the party) - via steam - and it doesn't work. It puts a bar on my taskbar as if there were an application there but if I click on it all I get is about 2 seconds of black screen and then I'm back at my desktop. So much for giving Steam another chance. :(

I got both TQ + expansion but I'm a little confused. The TQ game by itself seems to not have any of the updates in UI and extra features. But the expansion has all this and the original campaign too. So did I waste my money on the original and what is it doing on my harddrive if the expansion has everything?

No you need the Core game to play the expansion. The expansion adds all that stuff to the core game.
