Sorry to hear about your PS3 man. What's the ambient temp in your room?
However, in the spirit of QT3 you really should change the thread title to "My PS3 is crapping out."
I've noticed strange white horizontal lines flashing across the screen whenever my PS3 was somewhat stressed -- no flashes in the crossbar menu, some when playing a Blu-ray disk, and increasingly lots of them when playing a game.
That has been getting worse and worse ever since I got the console, and as it happens it also got warmer and warmer here during the same time period. I think it's the thing called "summer" but I can't be sure since it's happening outside where I don't go.
Anyway, the room temperature has reached 24°C or 75°F now, and the flashes got really bad when I started up the demo of Sony's Geometry Wars clone after the PS3 had been running a while for the download. About a quarter of the screen was covered in white flashes. Turn off the console and let it cool down, and the flashes are gone.
The PS3 was sitting horizontally on an open AV shelf, with plenty of air all around. Apparently that's not enough, though. People recommend placing the PS3 vertically for better ventilation so that's what I'm going to try next.
I haven't found this problem mentioned anywhere. Am I the only one? It's not like I'm living in the hottest place on earth or anything, and I haven't kept the PS3 stifled between cushions either.

Wrap it in a towel -- that'll solve your problem.
(Seriously, though, I have to admit that this is the first PS3 hardware problem I've seen reported -- but I still love my 360).
Like I said, it's now 24°C or 75°F in here. Pretty warm but not exactly blazing tropical heat.Originally Posted by Skipper
I've had mine vertically since launch. Sometimes it runs for days since I forget to turn it off and it's working fine now. I would recommend trying that.
Chris I have a coworker who runs his in about the same temp but in an enclosed media cabinet. I'm quite sure it bakes in there but he has had no issues. It was purchased about a month after launch.Originally Posted by Chris Nahr
He runs it pretty frequently but doesn't do so overnight. Maybe your problem is actually something defective?
What the hell? A negative PS3 thread that I didn't start? It's as if millions of Gunmetals cried out at once and then were silenced.

Interesting. I'm not running it overnight either, no folding@home or the like.Originally Posted by Skipper
I have the Euro model without the Emotion Engine (I think) so the hardware is slightly different. But I would think that removing a piece of hardware should reduce the heat buildup, not increase it... and I wasn't running any PS2 software that would use the software emulation.
I'll see how the vertical position works out. If there's still trouble I'll get a warranty exchange.
I did feel a disturbance in The Force this morning. Immediately I dashed for the SDF Cave and connected to the Internet. Bringing up Qt3, I scanned the Games forum for new posts by DaveC. Nothing! But what's this? Chris Nahr's PS3 is displaying garbage on the screen? This can't be - every PS3 except for the first one I bought is flawless.Originally Posted by DaveC
Wait, isn't this the guy who played through Genji? The explanation is found! Chris broke his PS3 with a bad game.
It's clear now, he's a microsoft VM who attempted to throw us off the trail by liking Genji.Originally Posted by Gunmetal

I had a PS3 for a month running at the warmest time of year so far (24-28 celcius). Not a problem.
None of my PS3 owning friends has problems either. All have the EU version.
While I still believe the Xbox 360 failures a grossly overreported, PS3 failure seems rarer still (but it's been around for a shorter time and fewe are out there)
Sounds like you have defective hardware. I'd get it replaced.
Mine has been running non-stop for several months crunching F@H (along with Jason's, apparently), and the only thing more heat does is increase the fan noise a bit.

PS3 lacks proper ventilation. I drilled a bunch of holes in mine and I haven't had a problem since.
Are those like speed holes in your car hood?Originally Posted by Aszurom
Nah, more like venting holes in a brake disc. Since really all you have to play is Motorstorm anyway it's like being IN the game.Originally Posted by DaveC
Try drilling holes in your LCD screen next
Data is just 1s and 0s anyway. If you're really careful, you can just drill through the holes in the 0s. Less rotational mass = quicker loads
Update: Standing the box upright did help a bit, but only a bit. Various other measures such as changing the HDMI input or cable had no effect at all. The display errors definitely appear when the box is overheating and the fans are running at full speed. Strangely enough, the most stressful job for the PS3 is apparently the title page of Blast Factor. I got lots of white flashes there, much fewer in the actual game.
Sadly, just as I had confirmed all this... the weather cooled down. With only 21-22°C in the room and the box still vertical, I have to keep it running for half an hour before a few sporadic errors appear. A few days ago there were flashes all over the screen after just five minutes.
So I can't reliably demonstrate the defect right now, which means I'll have to wait for the next round of global warming before I can go and get an exchange.
I think it's obviously just a defective unit, and your thread title that the "PS3 overheats" is completely unwarranted. You're lucky you have better warranties over there; Americans have to rush to return something to beat 7 or 14 or 30-day policies.
K0NY, is that you? This particular PS3 clearly overheats, given a high enough ambient temperature. Obviously not all PS3s overheat, but not all 360s show red rings of death either. And everyone agress that both consoles run pretty damn hot under load. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more problems with the PS3 once more boxes are sold and have been in use for a while.
Heh. First I get accused of being a Nintendo fanboy, and now I'm a Sony defender. This is funny because I actually have more 360 games than either of the other two.
The problem is with your thread title. "The" PS3 does not overheat. "A" PS3 overheats. That's all. Yes, my PS3 seems to get even hotter than my 360, but at least it's quieter about it. Yes, we may see problems with the PS3 down the line, but this is the first I've heard of any, so I'm not too worried, whereas the 360 problems came much more quickly, Internet effect or not.
Well, the weather got quite warm again and the nastly flashes came back in force. Today I've shipped off the PS3 to Sony... I hope they'll give me a new one that will fare better.
The clerk who did the returns wanted only the naked PS3, not the box and accessories. I sure hope they have some proper packaging for the thing.
My PS3 overheated today. His thread title is fine.Originally Posted by Moggraider

One PS3 overheats and fucks up and you jump on him about having "The" instead of "A" in a thread title. That'd be like when the first tubeless tire went flat and someone said
"oh hey, you know tubless tires go flat? Yeh mine went flat today"
and someone else went
"NU UH!THAT DOESN'T PROOVE A THING JUST THAT YOUR TIRE WENT FLAT NOT THAT ALL TUBELESS TIRES WILL GO FLAT. YOU'RE A DUMBY DOPEY DUMB FACE MC DUMBO SILLY MAN HAT BOAT! ALSO I AM A FAN OF TIRES WITH TUBES SO DON'T ACCUSE ME OF BEING A TUBELESS TIRE FANBOY!".
Psssh. You're a month late to this flamewar, nutsak! I hope you brought cake
Cake for EVERYBODY!
Actually, "DUMBY DOPEY DUMB FACE MC DUMBO SILLY MAN HAT BOAT" is cake, basically.
So I got my replacement PS3, after almost exactly two weeks. Seems to work well so far though I'll have to see how it holds up under stress. I found that I could simply "activate" the new console with my existing PSN account, so there's no need to re-purchase Super Stardust HD. Sadly, I didn't get an 80 GB model by accident...
I guess I'm still the only one here who had problems with his PS3?
I haven't had any problems with mine, and it's played a variety of PS2 and PS3 games for long periods. The closest thing I've had to a problem was images not showing up in the Playstation store a few weeks ago.
*requisite post extolling PS3 for not causing problems while simultaneously dissing 360 for disc drive troubles*
Attempt to turn this into a meta-topic by making snarky comment about my only PS3 issue being its inability to run many decent games...
