It wasn't just a sniper. He was Jack Ruby'd.
I think this deserves its own thread.
************ SPOILERS ********************
Dead. WTF? And killed by a sniper, no less.
One of my favorite suerheroes. Not the way I'd liked to have seen him go out. It's like the anti-Superman death. Didn't die trying to save a city or something. Just shot while walking up the steps of a courthouse, a criminal in the eyes of the law, no less.
Lame, totally lame Marvel. I think I'm done with Marvel for a while.
It wasn't just a sniper. He was Jack Ruby'd.
I think I might try to find a comic store on my lunch break. I need to own this one.
Meh, it's Marvel. He'll be back in four or five months.
It's all part of a plan so Cap can fake his death and go underground with Nick Fury and the Winter Soldier!
You fuckers thought I was joking

Its a clone I tell you.
In the meantime he's replaced by another Captain America who becomes bloodthirsty from the supersoldier serum and kills a bunch of innocent people.Originally Posted by extarbags

Issue 25 is part one of an eight-part story arc.

The idea that a great superhero would die in a meaningless & undramatic way actually strikes me as sort of interesting, in a "deconstructing the genre" kind of way. Still, I expect he'll be back. If he were a superhero I particularly had much fondness for I would probably be more disgruntled about it.
The problem is that the genre has already been deconstructed to hell and back, complete with meaningless and undramatic deaths. And it was done with more style and artistry than has been used in Marvel's latest stuff.Originally Posted by Gordon Cameron
I expect he'll be back too, but the whole Civil War fiasco, and the handling of the character in general have convinced me that Marvel doesn't quite "get it" in terms of what I'm looking for from superhero comics.
This is on CNN's front page, believe it or not, and there's an interview with some guy who works on the comic, where he implies that Captain America is dead for good -- precisely because they want to get away from that whole "Big deal, someone died, I'm sure he'll be back" feeling.
Captain America is a property, not a character. Same for Magneto, Jean Grey, Colossus, Superman, Robin, and Batman's spine.
Properties don't permanently die, this is more appearance of change. I don't even think it'll last more than 2 issues.
EDIT: Rywill, even though it looks like it, I wasn't directly responding to you.
Imagine how painful it would be if someone had told you things under sworn secrecy and you had to shut up about them for the next ten months. I'm not saying that happened, I'm just saying.Originally Posted by RickH

Every store around me is sold out. Word hit the street fast.
Hoping that it's a dream.
I like the quickly put together history between Steve Rogers and Frank Castle.
Don't worry, Marvel doesn't like comic dealers to make extra collector money on new issues. They'll reprint it as many times as necessary.
Which only lasts until there is a change of leadership at Marvel and the next guy says "Killing Captain America! What were you thinking? Bring him back stat!"Originally Posted by Rywill
Like it matters. Cap'n America was a dinosaur. He should have died after WWII and before Viet Nam.
With a symbolic role like his, it's really easy to imagine someone else 'taking up the mantle' though, so they've got at least one easy out.

If this is the idea behind it, it makes me wonder why they brought Mar-vell back during Civil War, when he'd been one of the only high profile comic deaths that stuck.Originally Posted by Rywill
My guess- Sharon Carter for the New Capt. America. Oh shocking a woman!!
When you see the details of the story(cough wiki cough), it could actually work.
Wow, it only took them 10 years to copy DC with Superman.

I've always been a bigger fan of Steve Rogers, than Captain America, so I'm hoping there's a bait & switch hidden behind the scenes.
Brubaker, the current writer of the series, is perhaps the best storyteller the character has ever had, so I'll be sticking it out either way.
Maybe they just shot Bucky who was in disguise?
If they make the Punisher the new Captain America I'm not going to be very happy
Exactly. Every single person working at Marvel today may sincerely believe that this death is permanent, but that doesn't matter. He'll be back -- not just a new guy in the Captain America suit, but Steve Rogers himself. The only question is when.Originally Posted by Kevin Grey

Marvel could be planning to have Pink Elephants take over the role of Captain America, or a Donald Trump- Rosie O'donnell team stand in for Cap and Bucky, though. Because "How f*&king stupid is that?" apparently stopped being a stumbling block for them a while ago.
Dumbledoor dead, now Cap?
When will the misery end...
