You shot JFK! By the way, you have to fix your link and get rid of the closing parenthesis.
Is that the last of the Kitty Hawks, then? Combined with the retiring of the F-14, it feels like the end of an era.
I wandered down today at lunch and snapped few photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/writersmark. The carrier is being decommissioned at the end of the month and is making one last port call in Boston.

They keep saying "it's one of two remaining oil-burners," so I believe the other Kitty must be out there somewhere.
Thanks for the catch.
I was working in one of the big high rises downtown sometime in 2005 when it came to call. We could see it real well out of our suite's windows. It's quite a sight.
Nice...
It's actually not considered part of the Kitty Hawk class. Originally it was, but then they altered it so much in building, it became the only ship in the "Kennedy" class.
I read up somewhere awhile back that her deck isn't even certified for flight operations, but yet, they kept her commissioned.
Let's hope Boston PD doesn't mistake her for a mysterious box full of wires and batteries and blow her up. :)
Edit: The other burner still out there is the Kitty Hawk herself.

My #1 warshipspotting moment has to be the time that the USS Missouri came to Vancouver. I was fortunate enough to be headed up the mountain for some skiing, and was able to watch it sail through the First Narrows from above, then from a nice overhead angle as it entered English Bay.
Carriers may be the heavy hitters of the USN, but nothing beats the scary majesty of a battleship.
And the only thing better than that is watching one fire the 16" guns. The whole damn ship slides over in the water.Originally Posted by Enduro_Man
USS Kitty Hawk is still around. It will probably decommission 2008-2009.
This just in, the Boston PD bomb squad has just detonated the USS JFK out of fear it was a bomb.
I want to take my boy down there to see it, any suggestions on a good location to view the ship? Any buildings around that will let you get a better vantage point?
Apparently the last time the carrier was in town, 50k people lined up for the tour, starting at 2am the previous morning!
Nice pictures :).
I got a private tour of the JFK while she was in drydock. This was back in like... 95 maybe? 96?
It was pretty impressive. Got to see all sorts of cool stuff - including the admiral's stateroom (or whatever it would be called). Even got to go under the ship, which was one of the more intimidating things I've ever done.
If you just want to get a look, your best chance is maybe the Hyatt at Logan Airport across the harbor. Where I was was still uncrowded since it was a workday.Originally Posted by sw001
Dude I had a simliar experience in the late 80's with the Ranger. My uncle was an A6 B/N at the time and he got me and my dad into see her in drydock in Long Beach. I had been on her before but never UNDER - it was just mind boggling to be standing under a fucking air craftcarrier! I later had the opportunity to sail on her from Hawaii to San Diego on a Tiger Cruise. They put on a cool air show with F14's doing super sonic flybys and A6's dropping live ordnance. Cool stuff.Originally Posted by jeffd

I got to tour this baby as well while in the Navy. It was one of two carriers I got to see (I served on a converted landing craft.) They are very impressive. The sheer awe of being on a man-made ship that big really hits you as you walk around on it.
However I feel for some of the guys that are stationed on carriers. A lot of ports aren't big enough to take them, and even fewer take the new nuclear carriers. It makes for long sails and few port calls, two things you never want as a sailor.
This line is reacting in a strange manner with the anus song on the other thread to produce convulsion in my lungs.Originally Posted by Skipper
