Battlefield 1942.
edit: or tribes.
I'm coming to the end of my Battlefield 2 love - affair. The buginess, the long load times, the general grief involved in playing it has taken its toll.
Luckily, tomorrow a shiny Dual Core PC with Geforce 8800 Video card will be mine! so system requirements be damned!
Anyone got any good recommendations for team-based FPS games?
Is planetside any good?
Is COD 2 still active online, with lots of players?
Ideally I'd like a game that has a low griefing / teamkilling quotient, and not too many kids typing in l33tspeak at each other. The adverts really put me off 2142, should I just overcome that?
Skill wise, I'm not L33t, but not L4M3 either. I'm not interested in high scores or ranks, and probably won't bother joining a clan.
Any suggestions most welcome.

If you can handle a blast from the past, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is still one of the best team FPS's out there. I also find Day of Defeat to be fun.
Planetside is pretty well dead. I tried getting back into it a few months back and there just are not enough people playing anymore. You just have these giant empty continents everywhere. Sad.
ET:QW will probably be fantastic, assuming it comes out someday.
Do you not play on the TacticalGamer server? It's rather worthwhile.Originally Posted by cliffski
Planetside is amazing. Assuming you A) get on a good team and B) the Planetside server population hasn't dwindled out of existance since last I played two years ago.
You might want to give Armed Assault a try. It doesn't give instant rewards so most kiddies will pass it over in favour of more action-y stuff.
I still miss Planetside. There's a free trial program out there, you can play forever but only up to level 8 or something. Get to it!

I hate advertisements in games too, but it's simply NOT a problem in this game... at least not yet.
Tribes.
Is tacticalgamer still running a BF2 server? I did like playing with those guys...
And for my money, it's BF2. Though I haven't tried the latest version...
Tribes TAC...
RIP
Well if you want a FPS with a busy scene and plenty of full servers, Gamespy stats are interesting.

If you divide those populations by what game-type/mod they're playing it's even more telling. HL2 in particular I think is 60% Counter-Strike:Source and 30% DoD:S and the rest random mods. HL2 CTF is pretty fun, but I think it'll pale compared to TF2 (whenever that's done).
Interesting that BF2 still totally crushes BF2142 in terms of active servers and players.
Get a cheap copy of BF 1942 and try some of the excellent mods for it like Eve of Destruction.
Day of Defeat.
Unreal Tournament looks best, plays best, has the most variety, and has the best mods imo; but then again I still load up Quake 3 every once in a while... perhpas I'm out of touch.

I've played them all (almost) and I keep coming back to DoD:S and DoD.
BTW DoD:S still looks extremely nice with everything on which should not be a problem with your new system.
Sadly I don't think there's a game that fulfills this requirement. While some games can try to make it difficult to ruin the game for others, it seems like people always find a way. It's more a matter of finding well maintained servers where idiots get kicked and banned quickly, and of course finding reliable people to play with.Originally Posted by cliffski
America's Army is pretty hardcore about team-play, and since each player only gets one life per round, griefers are ejected very quickly. For something a little faster-paced, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is also pretty good about enforcing team-play. Both games are available as free downloads, so they're definitely worth a try.

Planetside does. Or at least it did, back when there were actually people playing it. It had a very effective anti-griefing system that still allowed for friendly fire.Originally Posted by Thrag
Hmm,, thanks for the tips. I did enjoy COD massively, so I may have to invest in COD2. Plus as I understand it, that's a game that will love my new high-spec machine.
They have two BF2 servers running mods; Point of Existence and Project Reality.Originally Posted by Matt Perkins
If you're looking for any game to push your rig to the limit, don't count on it.. maybe when Quake Wars come out?
You can however enjoy Counter-Strike Source at 200-300 fps easily, and it could be just me, but that game is still the one that doesn't get oldest after you play it so many times (at least for competitive gaming).
I am a sucker for the WW2 thing still, so I'm hoping to find lots of populated COD2 servers when my copy turns up on Tuesday, following my PC which STILL isn't here, but may be here Monday. grrrrrrrrrr.
Everyone seems convinced ET:QW will e the greatest thing ever. I'm kind of sick of hearing about it. Maybe it will be good, but if you haven't played it, you will not know , and I reckon I'll be long dead and buried before either it, or Spore, gets released.
I'm telling you if you are into WW2 and you have a new rig you HAVE to at least try Day of Defeat: Source. IMHO it's much prettier than COD2, plays better, and is only $20! You can't go wrong here man!
Dystopia sounds pretty cool. It's an objective-based multiplayer mod for Half Life 2 that takes place in a cyberpunkish world.
It was also forgiving enough to allow you at least an occasional lapse when you just absolutely had to kill that one annoying fucker who wouldn't go away. And of course smart enough to know that squad members are always fair game.Originally Posted by Ben Sones

Dystopia is fantastic but a lot of people don't understand how to complete the objectives. If you're playing with a team that knows what to do though, it is a ton of fun.
I'll put in another vote for Day of Defeat and DoD: Source too.
The Project Reality mod for BF2 is bloody excellent, even if it does have a few bugs. It's certainly rekindled my interested in BF2, the degree of teamwork required to win the round is very high and voice comms are almost essential.
