Thank you for not adding a poll to this thread.
I still want a You Don't Know Jack channel.
It's called "Everybody Votes!", and aside from being a quite bare bones game experience ("Vote on polls! Predict how others will vote!") it's nice to see Nintendo provide a gaming channel for free. While I like how the weather, news, and browser channel look, but I don't think I've gone to any of those channels more than twice. I could see myself playing "Everybody Votes" practically every time I turn on the Wii. The production values are quite good and I hope we can expect some more toys like this in the future.

I use the weather almost daily. I use the news probably two or three times a week. It's really fun spinning the globe around and checking out what's happening everywhere.
The weather is a bit pointless (since its usually 8 hours out of date), so I go to my PC for that, but the news channel is really cool in how it presents everything... I love the 'speed news' feature where it jumps around giving you little tidbits of news from random places.
I am all about more free channels, but I would definitely pay for the aforementioned "You don't know jack" channel. I'll have to check out this "everybody votes" thing when I get home... I don't fully understand what its all about from reading this post.
Is there any way to get an actual forecast from the weather? Just seeing a picture of snow isn't very helpful -- inches? ice?
my fiance and I used the weather channel to brainstorm ideas for places to go for our honeymoon
That'd be in the "What's your Perception of Everybody Votes?" thread.Originally Posted by Charybdis
This is kinda fun. Since we were all stuck home today because of the snow and being sick, everyone did their voting at the same time. What was cool is even the kids could participate because the questions were good for them too.
Looking forward to seeing the results and new questions too!
Eh, I think I'm already tired of Nintendo's gimmicky Internet channels. This new voting channel is even more pointless than swapping Miis.
While I was online I re-checked the AP-fed "news" channel but it's still a horrible dump of months-old tabloid garbage, at least where non-American news are concerned. Dear American Wii users: please, for the love of Miyamoto, do NOT think you get any information about the rest of the world from this channel!
Wife and I tried this last night. You can also submit questions so of course we submitted:
"Are these polls a waste of time?"
Somehow I don't think our question will be picked.
We're Americans. We already know nothing important happens in the rest of the world and/or we just don't care anyway.Originally Posted by Chris Nahr
It's cute, and free.
The main problem (aside from the totally boring questions) is that it takes 20 seconds or something to load the channel, and just as long to return to the menu. If channel-flipping were as fast as on TV, the widget-like apps would be a lot more functional.
"Are Japanese Wiis smaller than American Wiis?"
I have to thank Nintendo for this goldmine.
This is what I was going to ask, like every other channel does it feel like you basically have to wait for the machine to reboot everytime you go in and out of the channel.Originally Posted by David Hellman
Actually, this is my thought going into any channel. Is it worth the weird long wait for me to find out the latest news or weather, or should I take 2 seconds to go to Google on my laptop?
Laptop usually wins.
You guys really need to lighten up. It's throwaway free entertainment for like ten minutes a day or less. I guess if you live alone it's no fun, but with multiple people in the house it's definitely a good time.
Actually, I was having fun with it by myself.Originally Posted by Dave Long
I don't mean to sound overly negative, I mean it was a treat to see the blue light go on, and find a new channel ready for free download. It's just an observation about design and usability. For any kind of entertainment, hassle must be proportionate to gratification, relative to the other kinds of entertainment available.
I played my GameCube more than my PS2 largely because mentally, it *felt* like a small hassle to wait for the PS2 to boot up and go through its series of loading screens (I run most games off the hard drive, which takes even longer for the initial boot up). It's not like I wouldn't gladly wait for a game to load if I really wanted to play it, but most of the time I don't have my heart set on anything, I just want to flop down and mess with something for a few minutes.
There are a million inconsequential decisions made based on slight differences in perceived ease or convenience. After playing some Virtual Console, I'm about ready to get up off the sofa... I could pop into the Everybody Votes channel first, but probably it's just the same three polls as before, so I won't bother. Likewise, though it's moderately entertaining to spin the globe and check out the weather in different parts of the world, my inclination to do so is pretty easily thwarted by the prospect of an 8-second load time. If all the channels were immediately accessible, I'd probably flip through most of them every day. But because of the load time, I become more selective. Because it's really not that important.
Nintendo knows this. I'm sure they made it as quick as they could, given whatever. Being a relatively non-technical guy, I'm surprised the loading is this slow from flash memory. I thought it was supposed to... flash!
Yeah, that stupid load time is a killer for idle channel flipping. The channels are slow to load from the flash ROM, and when you return to the main screen you have to wait for the disk to spin up so it can show a pretty icon. Usability: poor.
hm, I tried updating my system saturday night, but I didn't see this channel show up.... wonder why.
You need to go to the online Nintendo Store (whatever it's called) and buy the channel under "Wii Stuff" (or something like that). It has a 0 point cost, so it's free, but that's how to install it. Exactly like the Opera beta browser.Originally Posted by ducker
