3-player CitOW is actually very good and worth trying out.

Well, I just broke out my copy of Star Trek: Fleet Captains to play. I had opened it before to make sure nothing was damaged (and luckily, nothing was).

But when counting the cards (which I didn't do when I opened it - it seemed like all the major categories were there in the roughly correct number), sure enough, I'm missing Card 3 of the Combat Missions.

Which of course means I simply cannot play the game until WizKids sends me a replacement. Such a minor thing, but what a bummer. I was all set to play tonight.

    LOTR: The card game

Beat the Hill Troll mission yesterday with a friend I taught the game to. He used Aragorn's deck and I went with Eowyn's, and by the end of the game he had his 3 heros supported by 7 allies!

Just did the Hill Troll mission ourselves. Had two Hill Trolls out at the same time, which is just mean. Somehow survived that, got to the second part of the scenario and got some treachery card that dealt damage to every character. Twice in the same quest round. Pretty much wiped the board about 4 quest tokens away from clearing that section. And we thought we were so tough after getting past 2 hill trolls!

I haven't looked over my extra cards too closely. Are there any that mitigate damage from treachery cards? Those things make me want to cry.

Grabbed a little game called Friday this weekedn by Power Grid (etc, etc) designer Friedmann Friese.

It's unique: A single-player only deck-building game about trying to help Robinson Crusoe get the hell off your island.

And it works. There's always an aspect to deck-builders (and CCGs) where you're challenging yourself anyway: Can I make the best possible deck? I remember a friend testing Magic decks by just seeing how much damage he could dish out to a non-opponent in how many rounds. Well, this is kinda like that, but less kludgey, obviously.

The only problem I had is that some of the card effects that modify other cards turn into an incomprehensible mess when you're drawing dozens of cards in one "hand" late in the game.

Also have my copy of Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001 - HUH? (as Tom calls it). I've only done a little follow-along with the sample play-throughs but it looks both intimidatingly exciting. Or is it excitingly intimidating?

There's a print-and-play version of Friday in the files section at Boardgamegeek. Been meaning to check it out but I have way too much other stuff to play right now and more on the way.

Check to see if instead of missing a card you have two cards numbered 6 (or was it two #8s?). It's a printing error. I can't recall the deck it was in and need to go to sleep right now or I'd look it up on BGG. Sorry.

There are cards in the spirit deck that can cancel 'when revealed' cards and the Hero Eleanor can cancel them as well.

In case I or someone else hasn't mentioned this already, ST:FC cards are prone to sticking together out of the box. Ensure this isn't the case for you, as other BGG members claimed they ensured it wasn't, but later found it was.

If you are missing one Combat Mission card, it won't affect gameplay, as you're not likely to use all of the Combat Mission cards in one play. Sure, the mission will be missing from that deck, but I doubt you'll notice its absence.

He's missing a Combat Mission card. I believe what you're referring to is an issue with one of the Klingon Command decks.

We flipped over a 'shadow card' at one point and gasped when we saw it was a second Hill Troll. Hard to believe you guys were able to kill them both!

After an hour or so, she wasn't even paying attention, and we gave up.

I was pretty disappointed, particularly after spending $35 on a 3-player game. My hunch is that the art design made her think it was too much like school, too serious.
My little story, quoted above, has a wonderfully happy ending. This weekend a classmate of my daughter invites her over for a playdate. In an amazing coincidence, it turns out this girl got 7 Wonders for Christmas also and loves it -- and so the mom then invites my wife and me over for dinner after the playdate, and everyone -- four parents and three kids -- sit around playing 7 Wonders, with the 10-year old classmate teaching all of us, and teaching it quite well. And now my daughter is sold on it.

Yay! Stories like that almost make me want to have kids, so I can introduce them to boardgames. Almost.

Sounds like I need to borrow your daughter's friend. I tried to play 7 Wonders again this Saturday and the same guy that ruined it last time ruined it again. I was hoping he was just in a bad mood last time. He groans when he sees the box, complains about every rule and icon, and just makes it miserable for the rest of the group. Its weird because we play heavier games with no complaints.

I thought about that, and I'm pretty comfortable it's just missing. Both my wife and I separately went through it at least two times each (with the thought that cards might be sticking together; I checked for weightier cards and looked at them from a side profile to make sure there wasn't two).

We also did all of the standard things - took out all of the inserts, etc.

So if it is stuck together with another card or something like that, it's certainly doing the best job of hiding that I've ever seen. :)

Trust me, you can do it wrong. My 20 year old officially hates board games now, overexposed <sigh>.

So last night I watched Ironclad (a movie about a castle siege) and was wondering: are there any board games where you build a castle then play out a siege defense? Preferably with lots of little miniatures.

Stronghold, but I don't think it has mini's. Of course if you want to delve into the world of historical minature wargames, there's plenty there.

Stronghold looks the closest to what I'm looking for, but I really like plastic miniatures. Also, a "realistic" or "historical" game would be great, as the group I play with is not so into fantasy games. I did a search on BGG and didn't see much. Maybe this market is too niche.

I don't know Slyfrog. But in his late teens he decided he'd had enough. Now this is from a kid who at 10 years old got mad because we stopped playing Twilight Imperium 2 after 6 hours because he wanted to finish the game. He was also teaching my friends Magic the Gathering when he was five years old.

So I guess it's burnout. But he's had a great background in it, and when his hands give out from playing too many video games at least he'll have something multiplayer to fall back on. And he'll still join us from time to time if I ask him nicely or if he wants the house for a party or something like that :)

He'll be back. I played all sorts of games as a kid, then around the age of 17 I gave it up. There comes a time in a young man's life when his thoughts turn to beer and women. Around 25-26 I had had my fill of such nonsense and came back to gaming. Starting with video games and more recently diving back into board games (largely because I now have people to play them with).

Also, there comes a time in your life when you don't want to share hobbies with your mom.

I like to think we really did it legit, too. About the only thing I dislike about the game is that there is no one there to cry foul if I botch a rule (like in a computer game, or feedback in a Watch It Played video ;) ). As a traditionally non-boardgamer until LOTR, it takes a bit of getting used to!

If you think fending off two Hill Trolls is difficult, wait until you play Conflict at the Carrock where it forces you to fight four even nastier Hill Trolls at the same time, all of which are made nastier by various ongoing effects that increase their stats. We still haven't beat it.
