What is the quintessential quintessential Nintendo DS games thread.

Bought a Nintendo DS yesterday on whim. Picked up "New" Super Mario Bros. and Yoshi's Island DS so I think I got platformers covered.

What else should I get...to have the true/best DS experience that can be?

Mario Kart DS. No collection is complete without it.

We've had at least five of these threads in the last two weeks.

To me "quintessential" does not mean the same as "best".

I would say that the two games which best sum up the DS are Mario Kart and Brain Age.

I'd say the game that takes makes best use of the stylus is Kirby's Canvas Curse, or Trauma Center.

I don't care for the "Quintessential" games, I guess.

    My "must haves":

    Phoenix Wright
    Elite Beat Agents
    Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

The closest thing to a quintessential I've played and enjoyed is Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

Phoenix Wright should be one of the two. It's unique enough.

Ouendan. In Japanese. It's not as awesome in english with bad pop music you've heard a million times before.

Ouendan, Kirby, Meteos - not only good games, but a good variety of activities.

I know this is a little off subject, but what's FF3 like? I don't have a DS yet, but will be getting one in the near future. I have pretty much every other FF out now except 11, since I'm stuck in WoW limbo. Is FF3 much different than the other iterations?

My choices: Advance Wars DS and Animal Crossing.

I've heard Mario Kart is sort of okay single-player, and then it falls apart in multiplayer because everyone does a continual weave-boost "snaking" thing.

That and dropping in the middle of the first race if they feel they are going to loose. That's the part that kills me most. I've been in a few matches with people who snaked through the first match, but when they saw no one else was they raced normally through the last three to keep things a bit more fun for them and the rest of us non-snakers.

Mario Kart: DS is the best in the series for single player. Best track design, best item selection, widest diversity of drivers/cars. Even without multiplayer it would be one of the best games on the system.

"Snaking" can be aggravating, but, for one of the most luck-based racing games, it rewards players who practice and have skill. The best way to avoid snaking and race "correctly" is to vote for narrower tracks that are much more difficult to snake on. The figure 8 and the oval track are notorious because of the snaking, but other tracks are a bit more fair.

I haven't played in a number of months and I can't speak for current online environment, but I think if you vote intelligently and play multiple times with people that match your play style, you'll have a fine time.

There are so many bad DS games out there that I rent just bout everything instead.

Only ones I bought (sometimes buying my rental from Gamefly at a big discount)

    -Advance Wars DS
-Age of Empires: Age of Kings [name is a misnomer really as it's a fine, turn-based strategy game on DS, NOT an RTS]
-Meteos [there's a followup, Meteos: Disney Magic, due in February '07 (http://www.gamefly.com/products/deta...d=122890&tab=2)
-Starfox: Command (though "stylus flight" ain't for everyone)

I rented Mario Kart and after crashing into walls for an hour I returned it. Most though, like or love it. :D

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow hasn't been mentioned yet. That's our current addiction.

It's tough to find but you can order it from resellers on Amazon.

It left me cold. Not different enough from Super Circuit or MK64.

It's available on walmart.com if you don't mind supporting evil.

It left me wishing my wife and I both had DS's so we could play it multiplayer together like we would with MK:DD or MK64. But I loved the fact that they culled 16 tracks from the previous games and brought them back, along with 16 new ones. It made it a lot of fun to bring back some of the memories of how short to take the turns.

How about an informal Qt3 MK:DS raceing meetup next Friday. We'll exchange friend codes and get some racing on. Just in time for the Christmas season!
