Only news I've seen was that the search was expanded... they apparently ate in a Denny's at Roseburg on Nov. 25th at 8PM which was the last they had been seen. Now they're checking secondary routes, etc.

All this talk of death and destruction is definitely bad fuckin' mojo. How about if we all keep that shit to ourselves or start a new thread until we get some news?

There was also a recent story coming out of santa cruz area talking about a couple that went for a hike and were lost for several days, in the same kind of wooded places that are where Kim's family is missing. There were literally people right next to them and flying over in helicopters that had trouble finding them. But they made it out, and it's jsut a matter of finding them.
Problem is... they've been gone for over a week now. It's not a good thing.

--- AlanAfter searches in Oregon's Curry and Douglas counties, new information on missing CNET senior editor James Kim and family isans narrowing the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County, according to reports Monday.
A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family's cell phones last Saturday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale late Saturday night, local news reports say.
Glendale is located off Interstate 5, south of Roseburg, where the Kims were confirmed to have stopped at a Denny's restaurant on the night of Saturday, November 25.
Cnet just posted! Says Kati and kids found alive, they're looking for James!

and from the james and kati site:
"12/4/06 - 3:15pm - Kati Kim and her two girls have been found, they are being helicoptered out to a hospital. James Kim went out on foot two days ago and the Search and Rescue team are now tracking him and hope to find him soon."

And they'll find him. That's seriously great news.
A far better outcome than I would have expected this late in the game.
Wow! Great news.

They may have had camping gear, including food. Certainly they had a set of snowshoes and enough gear to makes James think it was worth a try to walk for help. Things look much much better.Originally Posted by MattKeil

Goddamn right! Let's hope they find the hubby.
Fantastic news! I hope he is OK too.
Hmm, interesting from the press conference..
* They weren't real definitive other than the fact that "they got stuck in the snow" off of the main road
* They used the car to stay warm and when they ran out of gas they burned tires
* Wife and kids appear to be in "great shape" for being out of the wilderness in 9 days
* Husband left in the morning 2 days ago, down into a drainage but towards the general direction of a lodge I think, but 2 USFS people are tracking his footsteps now

Surely it's just a matter of how fast the dog on the trail can sniff and run at this point...?
This is actually on the front page of Yahoo right now.

Although I have never met (nor heard of) these folks before the posting started here, they've been in my thoughts and prayers.
Thankfully, that hasn't doomed them.
Keep the fingers crossed for James...
HOOORAAAAAYYYY!!!!!!!!!
My wife and I have been really upset ever since hearing the original news. As we have one young daughter and hope for more kids, and as we're looking to buy a station wagon much like the one these folks had, and as we have relatives in Portland and have traveled there already (albeit by plane), and as we're also high techies living in the bay area... it all felt a little too close to home.
THANK GOD the wife and kids are OK. Go go bloodhounds and forest rangers!!!!!
What a beautiful picture:
Fingers are crossed for James as well.
This picture is making me all teary-eyed.
This one hit way too close to home; a friend of mine's the one that called in the missing person report and watching her deal with this has been too much. Keep positive thoughts out for James, please.
aww, mono beat me with the picture.
Wow, it's really nice to have a happy ending to one of these stories. Here's to running the table and finding James alive and well, too.Originally Posted by Aleck

I haven't posted in this thread, since I had no stake in the tragedy, so what would posting my feelings here help anybody? But this hit close to home (I dunno, same agegroup, 2 kids roughly the same age, similar jobs etc. etc.) and I've really been thinking about it with that feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach - that picture is wonderful and I really hope he's okay as well.Originally Posted by sara tonin

It really pays for everybody to have some idea of the basics...sounds like the Kim family did pretty well. I'm praying they find Jim today.

This particular piece of info is not good, if true:
--- AlanLocal news stations are reporting that searchers have found a pair of pants confirmed by police to be James Kim's at the bottom of a ravine, where he is believed to have traveled on foot. Oregon State Police could not be reached immediately for confirmation. Unconfirmed reports say rescuers may also have found another of his personal items near the pants.
Like all geeks, he is determined to claim his place as King of No Pants.
Slightly more promising version of the same thing:
Oregon State Lieutenant Gregg Hastings has confirmed that searchers found a pair of pants they believe James Kim left as a marker at the bottom of a ravine, where he is believed to have traveled on foot. Unconfirmed reports from local news stations say rescuers may also have found another of his personal items near the pants.
