    Web site oddness

For the last 18 hours or so, I've been unable to connect to my website (www.philsteinmeyer.com).

My provider (Lunarpages), CAN connect, and sent me an e-mail back with the contents of my front page (i.e. so they really did get there).

I CAN see the files from my website in an ftp program (filezilla), but NOT in a browser (Firefox and I.E. on a PC, also tried Safari on a Mac). Rebooted PCs, etc, but still can't see it. Obviously can see the rest of the web (or I wouldn't be able to post this).

Also, on my Windows machine, I did the 'reset connection' thing, which theoretically flushes cached DNS settings etc. No help...

I also put up a very simple test page (www.philsteinmeyer.com/test.htm), just in case there was some bad interaction happening with my normal, relatively complex main page, but I can't see the test page either.

So, why would I be able to see the site/files in an ftp program, but not in any of several HTML web browsers? Why would the rest of the 'net work for me, but not that site?

    [edit - fixed links]

Do you FTP to the same address or do you FTP to ftp.philsteinmeyer.com?

Just to let you know, I can't reach the web page either.

Maybe you've got some piece of spyware/malware installed by accident? Look in your "hosts" file and see if there is an entry for that domain.

What happens when you try to connect with a browser? What type error do you get? Is it the same error across browsers?

Well, now I can. Anyway, I bet since straight HTML didn't work either it was an issue with Apache.

Works fine for me with the link provided in the OP.

Worked on both Opera and IE.

OK, I rebooted my hub and router, and now it works.

    The intarweb is annoying.

For me to get from my PC to the net, it looks like this:

PC -> 4 port hub -> Vonage switch thingie (all these are in my upstairs office)

    through wire to basement

-> another 4 port hub -> Cable modem thingie.

Every time the power flickers (every couple weeks) there's a high likelihood of oddness. I have to run around the house rebooting various things, pulling power plugs, wait 5 seconds, replug, etc. Sometimes there's a magic sequence to it all. And it's rarely the same. Plus, I do all that, and sometimes the problem is on my provider's side, and I never really know until I've spend 20 minutes rebooting stuff.

Yeah, I know it's my fault for having a convoluted home network, but still...

That is a bizarre network setup. Why run your connection through the vonage device?

    Should be more like:
    Code:
    WAN
      |
    Cable modem
      |
    HUB/Router -------------------------
     | |
    Your computer Vonage jobby
That's how I do my network with vonage. The two hubs is weird too, but I assume you have another reason for that.

Probably has 2 hubs because the downstairs one is way down in the basement and he wants good wireless coverage. At least that's what the guys in my office do when they need better coverage than they get from the router in the basement.

Pretty much what Charlatan says. Cable comes in to basement, and my lineouts to various rooms in the house all converge there, so that's hub #1.

I've only got one line to my office, which I need to split for 2-4 devices, hence the second hub. I can't remember why I put the Vonage thingie between my hub and the main connection, rather than as a spur from my office hub. There may or may not have been a reason at the time.

I can't put the Vonage thing in the basement 'cause I'm not running all the phones in my house on Vonage, only my biz line and fax in my office.
