A coworker is heading to Dominican Republic next week and says she usually brings back Cigars. I know very little about the subject. In fact, the only times I've ever had one in my mouth is to socialize with snobby people. I don't smoke cigarettes either. So how does DR rate in terms of cigar quality and is there a certain kind from there that's better than others?

Cigars are great because you can enjoy the nicotiene and the social scene without having to put smoke in your lungs. Also they have real flavor, unlike the paper of most cigarettes. I love sitting on my deck, enjoying a cigar and a glass of wine, a perfect view, and coding.

Like I said in the other thread, I prefer the size just about cigarillos. Cohiba Club is a nice Cuban one, and León Jimenes Petites another good choice from the Dominican Republic.

The DR cigars are good, that's where most of the big manufacturers moved once the Cuban embargo was put in place.

I wish we'd drop this damn embargo already.

Also, switch to pipes. You'll thank me.

Seriously, I can't really go back to cigars now that I've learned how to smoke a pipe. For outings with the boys cigars are great, but for your backyard/deck pipes are king. Plus you usually smoke 1/5 to 1/10 or so of the tobacco.

I don't smoke, as a rule. But when traveling, I normally do pack a pipe. There's something relaxing about sitting on a balcony, surveying a lush landscape and smoking scented tobacco.

Pipes are just too much of a hassle. First to get them going, then to clean them out...

    1. It makes you smoke less.

    2. The cleaning and getting them going is part of the fun for me. Part of the ritual.

    3. I really do think the tobacco tastes better. Plus you can buy a bag of tobacco for $4. My current one has lasted me around 6 months now, and is not even half empty. Besides the cost of the pipe, it's gotta be the cheapest way to smoke. (unless you are addicted to cigarettes).

Well, I don't smoke much anyway, and I didn't smoke any less with the pipe. The money I don't mind since I'm stinking rich. And I don't smoke much anyway.

I generally smoke mine when I'm on the veranda, watching the servants work in the gardens. I like to put mine out on the ass of the fan girl, it makes a pleasant hissing sound and the smell of the flesh contrasts well with the port.

My favorite "affordable" cigars are Romeo y Julietas. I buy the Bullies regularly (great smoke for the buck!), but I enjoy many of the other Romeos.

If I could afford Opus X Robustos, I'd smoke them daily. Luckily, I have a very generous friend who occassionaly treats me to these. God bless him; I have two in my humidor right now.

He also gave me one of these monsters: Opus X Perfecxion A, 9 1/4 x 47, comes in its own cedar case, and goes for roughly $75 online. Do I have a good friend, or what? I'm just waiting for the right occassion to fire it up.
