Are they finally moving to a DVD-style case?
Are they finally moving to a DVD-style case?
Was there a need? Did anyone have a problem identifying PC games? Honestly I'm going to miss the uniqueness of some PC game boxes. PC games aren't controlled by one giant monopoly, so why should there be only one box?
Looks like DVD-style cases, but not quite as tall.
Yes yes a thousand times yes. Number one pet peeve about pc games for me is the shitty nonstandard packaging. The days where the Infocom box was part of the experence are long long gone.Originally Posted by caesarbear
Cuz maybe they'll actually put DVD's in them instead of CD's?? I realize that's not what was said but we can always hope :)Originally Posted by caesarbear

I agree with this. After they got rid of the big boxes, I dont care if EA put them in boxes made of gummi bears and rainbows.Originally Posted by caesarbear
Yeah, I agree. When they had big manuals, the big boxes were worth it. Now you get crappy little manuals, so you might as well get the compact packaging.
Rise of Legends came to me in a CD case. It's very nice (both the game and the case, actually).
WTF, you mean they still make PC games?
I thought this was thread necomancy from the transition to little boxes a few years ago. So now we get standard logos too, eh?
Yeah, what's wrong with the little boxes? How could you possibly fit a manual longer than a pamphlet in one of those DVD cases? If it convinces B&M stores to stock more PC games I'm all for it, I guess. Although they're less relevent every year.
It's too bad that the article states that the image was release in hopes of pc game packaging becoming standardized. The only game that's going to be released this was is Madden 07. One can hope, though.
I suppose by "box" they mean ".torrent file"Originally Posted by Shadari
San Andreas found a very good way to supply a thick manual (or game world tour guide, whatever) with a DVD-sized case. But yeah, it hurts too much too throw away my old games boxes, but they were taking too much space.. I squashed 'em and keep them in my closet now.
Rob: worrying about things so you don't have to.
Worried? Not hardly. Annoyed by is more like it.Originally Posted by Bill Dungsroman

This is the new Microsoft approved box?
I hate it when that happens.Originally Posted by Aeon221
Um, what? Standardized box design and logo? It's another example of saving people from their own idiocy. I was looking through my PC boxes for the last few years and didn't come across any that didn't have a "PC CD-ROM software" or "PC DVD-ROM software" or "WIN MAC DVD-ROM" logo on it already, whether on the front, side, or back. Doesn't take much to notice it, as it's the same size as the ESRB rating logo (and in many cases right beside it). In essence, there's already a 'standard' logo that seems to have been attached to PC games for a long while.
I don't think it's necessary. Perhaps if people look at the boxes a little more closely they'll also notice the system requirements so they don't bitch about the latest game not working on their 7-year old computer.
I'm personally happy with Microsoft and EA for using the large DVD-style cases they already are. The games fit nicely with my console software on a shelf, they look good, and they're nicely practical.
I've been thinking about doing some Illustrator-fu and making my own inserts to go inside cases I buy myself to standardize my own library anyway.
Oh f... thats pretty bad news for pc gaming....
In the days of old i bought pc games because i´ve got a rules - book and some nice adons in form from maps, pins and whatever...
nowadays you get a shaby cd/dvd with a small case, a rules flyer and a warning that you dont pirate the product... (copyprotection)
Best example is homm5 where in the booklett or in the game you didnt even get told what the special abillities of the units do....
So whats holding people up? consience???
So yes what sould hold people to download the game with .torrent?
Im a marketeer (but lucky me not anymore for games) myself and if i would treat my customers that way i would be out of business in no time.
But give the customers more of these fine examples of marketing and next were wondering why pc games are d00med....
