Is Windows XP a security disaster waiting to happen?
Ok, in the last week or so, I have had to download around 10 different updates to windows XP and various programs within the O/S. What the hell is going on? It kind of scares me to know that new holes are found in my O/S at such a rate. I like XP, and I haven't had nearly as many problems with it as other Windows systems. But this is getting ridiculous. Is it just because it auto-updates? Perhaps the other systems had the same problems and number of updates, but they were spread out because I had to go look for them, which I seldom did. Anyone know?

I suggest moving to a deep underground bunker and cutting off all contact with the outside world. It's the only way to be sure.

In general, Microsoft's security history is a poor one.* Auto-update is probably a good thing, presuming their updates don't just screw things up worse.
*In fairness, it's also a huge target because of the installed base.

For security updates, I get just as many notices from Redhat's RHN alert, if not more, than I get from MS's security warnings.
99% of the updates are to cover theoretical security holes, extremely rare or difficult to pull off issues, or just stupid crap. Get a firewall, don't download warez off the irc and you should be safe.
