    Prison Break...

Along with college football, the end of August means that a new fall TV season rolls around.

First up, Fox's Prison Break. Guy commits crime on purpose to get thrown in jail, so he can bust his death-row brother (accused of killing the brother of the vice president, no less) out. The gimmick: he designed the prison, so he knows the layout of the prison, and he has the schematics tattooed on his body.

Death row brother played by former John Doe himself, Dominic Purcell.

Robin Tunney plays the family friend/attorney/cute girl.

Directed by Brett "I'm doing X-Men 3 By Default!" Ratner.

Halfway through the pilot, but already annoyed by the Kim-like pratfalls of the teenage son (He's a good boy gone bad because he hates his father, so he tries to buy pot off an undercover cop). Did we really fucking need this going on?

Bah, I just deleted my thread on this because you posted a minute more quickly than I did. Anyway, here's what I wrote in my thread:

Anyone catch the premier of this series (8-10PM Monday on Fox)? It's about a guy that purposely gets himself sent to prison so that he can break his brother out before he gets executed on death row.

I'm finding it VERY promising, as it has gritty prison survival plots; the main character trying to enact his plan before a) time runs out for his brother, and b) he gets killed or otherwise seriously messed up by other prisoners; a sinister governmental conspiracy to setup his brother as the fall guy for the death of the Vice President's brother; and plots involving their friend on the outside investigating said conspiracy.

I'm fascinated by what the prison break will entail, as they only show vague hints of what has been planned - I'm assuming it's something with the prison plumbing, Mafia assistance, the prison hospital, and a million-plus in stolen cash that another prisoner has hidden somewhere on the outside.

I have a feeling that the prison break will occur by the halfway mark of the season, and the rest of the show will be devoted to thwarting the coverup efforts of the shadow conspiracy and uncovering the evidence to exonerate the brother.

And, seriously, can anyone think of how they keep this idea going for multiple seasons, (assuming this series doesn't die in childbirth)? 24 stretches increduality as it is.. (how many fucking times can Jack Bauer get stuck in one of those sitautions)... but I'm really curious to see how many times a guy can get thrown in prison only to break out on purpose.

    two words, my friend:

    Tivo

ok, maybe it's one word but I can't imagine watching television without it... in fact, I kick myself whenever I watch something live and have to sit through commercials again.

    The show:

The two hour pilot was good enough to hold my attention, but I'm already sick of the main character glaring stoically off into the distance.

Ugh... the danger of using my PC as a DVR is when the fucking thing blue screens thanks to some shitty Creative/ATI driver.

So, I lost the first 24 minutes of tonight's episode.... Anyone want to recap it for me?

    SPOILERS...

The pilot ended with Peter Stormare (Abruzzi) about to cut off Michael's toes if he won't tell him where Fettucine (or whatever the dude's name is)--the guy who fingered Abruzzi--is. This episode begins with him still refusing to tell, so Abruzzi cuts off a couple of toes. Guards come in and stop them, carrying Michael to the infirmary where Dr. Sara asks him what happened and he says, "Don't make me lie to you." The prison guard acts like a dick.

Michael decides he has to get his cellmate Sucre in on the plan, as he's gonna have to do some digging in their cell. So he sets up a test, hiding a cell phone (hence the ep. title, "Cell Test) and then getting Lincoln to tell the dick prison guard that it belongs to Sucre to see if Sucre will rat them out. Sucre doesn't but when Michael reveals the plan, he goes ape shit anyway and gets himself transferred since he'll be out in 16 months anyway. The prison guard acts like a dick.

Michael gets a psychotic inmate. He thinks he'll dig when the guys asleep. The guy never sleeps because he's psychotic! The prison guard acts like a dick.

The son is forced to go into the Scared Straight program at the Fox River Prison (whatever the name of the place is) and is forced to see a mentor there for one hour a week. The mentor? His father. Turns out they love each other.

Lincoln is tasked to come up with a list of people to watch his execution. He chooses no one. Stacey Keach says, "Try again." He chooses his idiot child.

Abruzzi makes nice with Michael when his scary mob friend reveals that he's taking Abruzzi's children to live with him at his cabin by the lake. Abruzzi has the scary White Supremacist gay guy beaten before he can "gut Michael like a fish" and Michael tells Abruzzi he'll need a plane.

That covers more than the first twenty minutes, but it should do you. Oh, and the prison guard acts like a dick.

    "That went well."

Oddly enough, I thought this very same thing after watching the pilot of "Lost" last year. Actually I didn't even see how they could sustain a whole season on that silly premise. So I didn't bother watching any more. Oops.

Is it me or did that JR kid refer to "the guy that fucks my mother"? I swear to God it sounded like he said that. Did Fox actually use the F-word on TV?

lol no he said Fox River or something like that. The name of the prison. My GF thought he said the exact same thing as you. Tivo saves the day again.

I've been watching and it's pretty good but I couldn't believe how poorly they (the writers) handled the paranoid black woman.

From: "Oooh I'm too scared to talk to you get away from me or I'll shoot!!!!!"

To: "Ya here's the most useless information you could imagine now I'm going to leave unprotected to smoke."

Girl from the Craft: "Wait, let me just finish! It'll take two seconds!"

    "Peace out, I'm dead"

    *spoilers*

I knew they weren't just going to get out. It would've made the show a little silly to continue outside prison since that's the best part. This saga would probably be better told as a miniseries instead of a regular seasonal drama though. We can only take so many failed attempts. I'll keep it on my Tivo list for now. There's something really cool about breaking out of a prison. (why I loved Riddick's game)

The most recent episode of the show will repeat tomorrow night in its regular timeslot just before 24. New episodes resume next week.
