Even worse, I bought the preorder from EB and mine isn't a preorder version. I don't get to play today either. Been one of those days all around for me.
Grrr.... I stop by the local Gamespot, and eye a few of the collectors editions there. So I pick one up, happily come home, and install it.
And now they say they aren't opening the servers until 2 AM local time? That's very unprofessional, IMO, to sell a box where the game is intentionally broken. If you're going to set a time and allow early play, do it BEFORE the game is in the stores, folks.
People who walk into a store and walk out with a box should have a reasonable expectation that there is a game inside that is not arbitrarily disabled. Or they need to put a big sticker on it that says "will not work until April 28" or something.
Grrr.

Man, maybe EQ2 can capitalize on this! I can see it now... "EVERQUEST: THE GAME THAT WAS ALREADY UP ON APRIL 27!!!"
Can you pay the $49 online and just download the game?
It has that incredbile 100k initial client download if I remember correctly from the beta...

The game was supposed to be in stores on the 28th, that was the release date and that's the date they were sticking to. It's not their fault if stores sell it early.

If it's not their fault (and by "they" I include the publisher) whose is it? Gamestop certainly doesn't run their servers.
I guess my point is that unless you can insure a rock solid street date, you should do your pre-order early play thing early enough that you can leave yourself some wiggle room for the real launch.
Did NCSoft actually embargo sales before the 28th? If so, they should bitch at the retail stores for selling it early.Originally Posted by Alan Dunkin
They did and they have, the game wasn't supposed to be out until the 28th. We shipped to stores early so that everyone would be certain to have it for the launch date.Originally Posted by Mark Asher

Because they'd cheese off the preorder folks, is my guess.
I understand your frustration, but I doubt it's this easy. I can imagine that it must be pretty frantic over there now as they get ready for tomorrow.Originally Posted by Xemu

But NCSoft has always been very clear that the game doesn't launch until tomorrow. You definitely should blame the store that sold you the game.

They weren't "clear" on it in the stores, or on the box, certainly. :)
I can see where you guys are coming from but blaming the stores seems pretty pointless to me. The people in control of setting the parameters of the situation are the devs. Street date leaks are fairly common and not being prepared for them seems like poor planning to me. I know on AOM (obviously not the same scale) we made sure we had the production servers up and running several days before street date to account for variability in the distribution chain, etc.
Are people really bitching that they can't play a day early?
It's still just a game, right?
Do you prefer Gouda or Stilten with your Pinot Egregio?
Hehe
It's the law though, if there is a recent launch then the more you want to play then it is inversely proportinal to how ready their servers are right at that moment! ;)
Well, like I said, the issue is not so much playing a day early (not like I don't have tons of games on the shelf!) but rather walking out of a game shop and not being able to actually use the product purchased. Maybe you guys are lighting cigars with $100 bills and couldn't care less if something you buy actually works as advertised. :)
Hopefully I'll have time to actually check it out later today...
That's a tough call. I totally understand Xemu's frustration. I think it's pretty fair for a consumer to say "Look, I don't care what's going on with your internal procedures or problems, if you put something up for sale, I expect it to work as advertised on the box." I'm sure the live date is something that isn't decided at the time the boxes are printed, but it seems like you could at least sticker them or something. Maybe other MMO devs will do that in the future. It does seem unfair to consumers.
OTOH, I can understand that NCSoft isn't the one that broke street, and I agree that the stores selling the game are also accountable--particularly with an MMO, they should know that the game they're selling won't even work on the day they're selling it. I suppose there's enough blame to go around.
As to the whole "Hey it's just one day" (or two days, or whatever it is), I agree with Xemu. Yeah, maybe it's just one or two days, but that's pretty frustrating. When I buy a new game, I'm usually pretty stoked to get it home and try it out. Getting home and being told "Sorry, you can't play for two days" would be very annoying, especially since my weeks are pretty busy and if I clear an evening to spend it with a new game, that probably took some effort. I may not even HAVE the free time two days from now, or something.

Uh, one of the freakin' benefits of preordering was to get into the action a day early. And doesn't that require you actually having the final game/key in hand? So then they must have known people would be able to get it early or they would have never had that preorder deal. That's the only reason why everyone else had to sit on their hands even though they had purchased the game.
Anyway, it had a ship date of 4/26 for a long time. And that means that the game is available on shelves the day after, and sometimes the same day (with EB/GameStop).
No, the 1 day early thing worked with your beta key. You didn't have to do anything extra to enable the one day early. In fact, your beta key will continue to work until midnight tonight (pacific time) because they wanted to give all the pre-order people 1 full day after release to go and buy the retail version before the beta key stops working.
Ah, ok. I had seen people talking about entering the final key and then the beta key, so it sounded like both were required.Originally Posted by roberdjp

Yeah, I think if everything were just moved up a day it would'be been swank, at least in the narrow terms of not frustrating me. :)
Anyways, once I got it fired up this morning it looked great for the all of 10 minutes I had to play before heading out...
Dunno which thread to use for gameplay talk. I figure the bitching about the server thread is better than the roll call thread.
Anyone have any thoughts on a good secondary class for an elementalist? I am somewhat inclined to take warrior, to make good use of my pre-order item (war pick), but I'm not sure how useful that would be to me. In a good team, the elementalist shouldn't have to do close combat, right? Pure elementalist (elementalist/elementalist) is the other thing I'm leaning towards, but it sounds a little boring.

Words fail me.
Dude likes the game, it's the A+++++ GREAT SELLER of enthusiastic reviews. I don't get the impression he's the sort of guy who sits down and tries to decide if GW is REALLY a better game than Ocarina of Time before giving his score.
Please don't try to make reviewing a science.

Is there any reason not to multi-class?
I would like to be the baddest specialized warrior there is, but if there isnt any penalty in picking up a secondary than I guess I will throw in another one.
Is two classes just assumed for everyone?
Thanks!
As I understand it, it doesn't matter if you take one class or two. You only get to take eight skills into a mission. If you take two classes, then you get four skills from each. If you take only one class (really taking the same class twice), then you get all eight from one.
Edit: I mean it MATTERS, but its just another choice that ends up at theoretically equal power. No xp penalty or anything.
