    DSL - Telco ISP?

    Howdy,

Right now I've got DSL - I've got the line through my phone company and my ISP is an independent out here. I'm paying a lot more for it that way - the line costs me 40 bucks a month and the ISP is 35 for 768k down 128k up.

Paying my phone bill today, the lady told me that if I go to Verizon's ISP I can get 1.5 megs down and 384k up for a total of 29.99 a month. This is *much* cheaper, of course.

My question is - is there any reason not to do this?

Um, that's 5 dollars cheaper. The speed increase seems nice, but I wouldn't jump ship over 5 dollars unless I'm sure the telco is offering a decent service. I prefer small ISPs who are typically more generous with usage policies, bandwidth limits, shell accounts, and static IPs.

Plus with taxes and fess that they may not be mentioning, it might not actually be any cheaper

I don't think I was clear. It's 45 dollars cheaper. Right now I pay 40 a month to my phone company for the DSL line and 35 to my ISP for, well, ISP stuff. If I go to Verizon as my ISP, I pay a total of 29.99 for both the line and ISP.

Ahh, I did misunderstand you. When I had DSL my telco would charge me for the DSL line and the DSL ISP services seperately. I didn't realize they were packaging them together nowadays

$35 for an ISP is outrageous. When I had DSL and a seperate ISP, the ISP was $17/mo. No more than if I had dial-up.

Unless you're getting extras, like static IPs, an above average USENET feed, stellar tech support (I miss dealing with a small ISP vs. a big company that treats me like a phone number), maybe the $35 is worth it.

btw the $29.99 Verizon deal might be one of those six month specials. It might jump in price a bit after that. Make sure you get the full details.
