Duh.
Dunno if Doom 3 or Riddick have a demo. Google is hard. :(
I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, Hardware or here, but I decided that since it's really about games that this was the appropriate place.
Last week I received my brand new baby, an Acer 8104 laptop (one of the new Sonoma chipset ones) with 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a shweet 128MB ATI x700 Radeon Mobility graphics card. 15.4" widescreen LCD, too, running natively at 1680x1050.
Of course I installed WoW on it and cranked the settings up to max and it runs flawlessly at native resolution and looks incredible. Even Ironforge on a busy night is acceptably smooth.
I need more eye candy, though, to blow away onlookers and the curious. So, what are some of the games that you folks have seen demos of that will make grown men weep with the newfound understanding that their life now has meaning?
It's all about the looks, so don't fret too much about gameplay. I want it free, I want it downloadable, and I want it pretty. If it supports high resolution widescreen, even better.
Oh, if you have any non-gaming suggestions, I'm open to them, too. For example I've already downloaded some of the 1080p Windows Media HD samples from Microsoft and impressed people with those.
Thankee-sai!

Why not use the hardware manufacturer's demos? Both ATI and NVIDIA have some impressive shows for download.
Half-Life 2 has widescreen modes. You have that game, right?
Sounds good, Jakub. None came with my system, but I guess I can poke around the ATI site for some nice ones!Originally Posted by Jakub

RobotPants: I don't have HL2, didn't buy it because my old system was way to anemic to do it justice. I'll poke around for a demo, though, to see if it shines on my new toy.
To be honest, I haven't been all that into following which games are the best in terms of eye candy because my old PC was nowhere near good enough to play them, so I avoided the frustration of even exploring the world of high-res PC gaming offerings. I've been mostly using my PS2 and Xbox for gaming lately, so this is a switch back for me (other than WoW).
The first demo I did download was the Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, it's just not eye-candy enough for me ;)

Yep, Half-Life 2 and Far Cry are probably the best. Or the latest 3DMark?
I was gonna say that...Originally Posted by Reed

DX9 demo. An entire FPS, < 1 MB.
Another vote for Farcry, this was my favorite FPS of the year and also the best looking in my opinion. HL2 and Doom3 still look great though.
Also checkout Rome Total War if you can apreciate the graphics of having a few thousand fairly well detailed men on the screen.
there is a farcry prequel machinma that uses a slightly updated cryengine- it's really nice, a couple minute long and then it loops. google will find it.
http://www.darwinia.co.uk - Darwinia demo, crank up the resolution, max everything and it really looks beautiful and surreal.
In the real world, you could try Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (or Warrior Within) both of which look stunning, both in terms of art and effects.
And you could probably just leave the first menu screen from HL2 on all day and get admiring stares at high resolutions.
