New Unreal Engine 3 tech demo's

They're shakycam, but some new footage compared to the stuff released last summer. If you're only gonna grab one of the brief vids, I'd suggest #4.

Don't get the WMV version. You have a muddy blob of something with a nice gurgly voiceover.

It sure was a nice looking muddy blob though.

Evidently, Microsoft just announced that all first party Xbox 2 games will use the Unreal 3 engine.

And wait till you see the GDC vids. So oriented towards optimied content creation it was sick. A highly effective presentation if you ask me.

Especially when you have to deal with the synch issues with the PS3.

Are the linked things from 1up not the GDC videos? I had assumed by the timing that they were.

Are we to the point yet where you can just hire one of the prolific high-resolution 3D artists out there to make models, run the model through a triangle decimation routine, apply the normal map, and not have to have someone specially proficient in the art of making really good game models vs. really good real world models? It would seem when we reach that point content creation ought to become somewhat easier.

You would think so yes, but judging form my failed experiences in the doom3 community it makes things more difficult, technically. (more software involved, more time needed, etc.) besides destroying a lot of the chances for stylization from individual artists.

Even long time experts in game art have trouble converting.

But your right that the rare "prolific high resolution 3d artists" CAN do it, at a rate of about one object every 2 days, ehihc has effects on gameplay....

This engine is amazing, but the tools for building with it are the real show stoppers.

    Epic has truly outdone itself.

These sound suspiciously like the comments I heard following the Unreal 2 tech demo in 2002. Go figure.

Epic's a company that's always seemed to focus on the tools.. Unreal 1s editor was good as well, once they released the C++ version that didn't suck.

What's so amazing about the newest iteration?

Was that Epic, or Digital Extremes?

So if a game that uses the Quake 3 engine sucks, it's id Software's fault, right? Great logic, guys.

No, I was saying Unreal 2 sucked. Not the games made off its engine.

My incomplete review of Unreal 2, with pictures! One day I may even re-install the game just to finish this.
