    A Good Dance Mat?

My wife wants DDR MAX for the PS2 for Xmas. However, when I look, all the "Dance Mats" look like utter crap. Does anyone have any advice on a $19.99-$29.99 mat that actually works?

You mean you only spend $30 for your wife's Xmas present?

    That's bad!

    Love costs $270.

But seriously. Any of the "deluxe" or "ignition" DDR pads on eBay will do. You can typically pick up two for $20 + $25 shipping (mats are fairly large).

Okay, more like $50, but I like the RedOctane Pad:

I have one of the Ignition pads I really like, but that's $100.

Naw, that's just ONE of her many many presents. It's the ONLY thing for the PS2 she's ever shown any interest in!

Crap! What makes a plastic dance mat worth $100? I can see a high price for a solid one.

Buy the 20 dollar mat and mount it on some plywood. Then buy 'hardwood floor protector' plastic stuff at home depot and BOOM you have yourself a 150 dollar mat. Strong enough to keep your sneakers on.

Do a quick net search and you'll find a million guides describing in much better detail this mod. It's very common, and the soft pads are basically unplayable without it.

No, no, no. Don't fall for that crap. You can get TWO of the "deluxe" or "ignition" type pads on eBay for a mere $20 (plus a not-insubstantial $25 for shipping), and they're all the same. Trust me. These things are all coming from the same taiwanese factories. There are some cosmetic differences, and the insert material may vary somewhat, but none of these differences really matter.

If you get into advanced songs (read: 5+ feet) then you will probably need to modify ANY soft pad with a firmer surface for better response as noted above. There are a couple routes you can go there as well.

The great thing about DDR Max is that it has literally months and months worth of challenge built in, even if you play for an hour every day. The skill differential between light, standard, and heavy modes for each song is HUGE. And if you manage to master all that, for all 70+ songs, there's double mode light/standard/heavy, where you use both pads at the same time. Yeow.

Thanks!! Tht's exactly the type of info I was looking for.
Does anyone know the dimensions of standard dance mat? Are they square? 3'x3'? I'll just get the guys at Home Depot to cut me a $4.00 piece of wood that size.

My Red Octane soft dance mat (which looks just like all the knockoff mats I see at Fry's, etc.) is 37" x 33". The 37" includes the chunk of plastic casing at the top where the cables attach, which sticks out an inch or so.

Wow, the wonders of ebay never cease. I wish they had them up back when I bought my pad way back when.

I'd suggest not putting the stupid foam insert in and play in your socks. Works really well on a hardwood floor. Obviously pretty worthless on carpet without a board.

Wow, I cannot believe how many people own these mats and actually play these dancing games. And admit it in a public forum, no less. Well, more power to you and go nuts.

If I cannot be drunk and 'accidentally' rub up against strangers and my wife's friends at a club, I do not see much point in dancing. Or should I say semi-rhythmically stamping on colored circles, squares, triangles and X's as they flash on a TV screen.

I can't articulate exactly why, but the game is a lot more fun and complex than it sounds. Plus, it's exercise, and it doesn't feel mind numbing like using exercise machines at a club. It's not work, it's a gosh darned videogame!

I guess you have to try it for yourself to understand the appeal.

I hear some people enjoy flower arranging, too, but I am not going to go out and try it or play Martha Stewart's Flowers XXX.

If it is only Parappa for your feet, then I really do not need to even try it anyway.

DDR is the only game I've ever gotten my wife to play with me for more than, say, 15 minutes. It's worth it for Spousal Game Acceptance Factor(tm) alone-- the exercise benefits are gravy at that point.

Does the gravy not offset any good the exercise is doing you? Ba-dum-bum! Ching!

Spousal Game Acceptance Factor(tm) is exactly what I'm trying to create.

If you're willing to play with some powertools, this is far and away the best solution of all:
