They get pretty freakish in the anime. The more powerful the demon, the more freakish they look.
I've only read a couple volumes of the Claymore manga, but it definitely seemed like Berserk watered down by a factor of ten. In particular, Claymore's monsters by that point....look like people, but have different eyes and maybe fangs! Ooh, scary! Whereas Berserk has already shown you at least four or five wholly different freakish things that should not be by the same point in that manga.

Well, the first couple volumes don't involve anything particularly badass, it's true. On the other hand, Berserk's demons are -all- incredibly monstrous. The art just seems all around better to me.
I only watched the claymore anime, but liked that aspect of claymore. I liked how the claymores looked innocent until they started using their powers and then became more and more affected by them.
oh and Guts did look quite badass in the first episode where it is in the future. Too bad the anime didn't go in to that more.
Well, after all the good advice, we started watching 'Last Exile'. After only three episodes I must say, the animation is absolutely breathtaking, if you are into that sort of thing. So far so good.
The gameshow episode is the only good part of Ergo Proxy. I can't believe I watched the whole show.
And both are immensely better in manga (especially Claymore). I know this gets said about most Anime series, but those two really botched the endings in the Anime versions.
Also, while Claymore is rather subdued in the beginning and the plot seems like it's be all over the place, they really pull the threads together later on into a very compelling plot with strong characters and character development.
I am looking for anime that is fun for kids and adults.
It doesn't have to be great just so long as it is not terrible.
Most of the anime that I have seen is either too childish for me to enjoy or too violent/weird/confusing to show to young kids. So if it satisfies both conditions then that is good even if it is only mediocre.
I dont believe that is the case. The guy has shown that he is a competent comedy writer with a good gag sense, and his art improved quite significantly over the years, but in the area of contricated plots and characters he's not quite there yet. Also, while Claymore is rather subdued in the beginning and the plot seems like it's be all over the place, they really pull the threads together later on into a very compelling plot with strong characters and character development.
I mainly follow him for art, its incredibly fun to see a person improve before your very eyes.
I remember awhile back having a discussion about how anime featuring battling spaceships is very rarely made anymore. It seems Toei noticed this and decided to rectify the situation.
Just watch crest/banner of the stars.
I kind of agree though but everyone likes mechs more so any show with space battles tends to have mechs flying around crushing huge dreadnoughts like flies.
Not sure it really counts, but Tytania was a pretty decent recent series featuring space battles.

I am pretty sure these shows are like ten years old and were considered "retro" even at time of release.
The original conversation featured a lot of back and forth about how bad Tytania sucked in comparison to Legend of the Galactic Heroes. (For the record, I liked it myself but wish the animation could've been more consistent.)Not sure it really counts, but Tytania was a pretty decent recent series featuring space battles.

Watching doramas now.
One thing I noticed is that episode that last one hour/one and half an hour are divided into two or three parts, and every part has its own narrative thread and conclusion. So if someone starts watching halfway through he still can follow what goes on (this works on TV). Then all the threads in the whole episode are interconnected together to reward whoever followed for beginning to end. It's a rather clever design :)
I watched the first episode of "Nobuta wo Produce". It's awesome. Just a typical school drama like every other anime you saw, with one new girl in the school getting bullied and the smart, beautiful and charismatic guy coming to rescue her. But in spite of a trite plot and humor that just won't work for a western audience (pathetic), this is absolutely fantastic. It has a great direction, great soundtrack and it's actually filled with good, natural acting. There's still a lot of typical acting excess style of the japanese shows, but at the end the characters grow on you and feel authentic. The story is a pleasure to follow and they are able to tell with it something that isn't so shallow as the concept would suggest. The typical idol protagonist just works here, especially when he's together with his crazy friend.
I'm actually quite impressed by this show. It shows emotion in a good way and it's amazingly produced. Great cast all around too.
And i am pretty sure that there hasnt been a better sci-fi animation ever since.I am pretty sure these shows are like ten years old and were considered "retro" even at time of release.
Crest of the stars is absolutely amazing show, as are its sequels, but i have to say i've rarely seen a worse job done with spaceship battles. When armies fight in that show - i have no idea what is it i'm looking at, everything just kind of flies around randomly, rainbow-colored flashes, lasers, you can MAYBE discern which side's ship just got in the frame, and even that with great difficulty. Horrible, just horrible.Just watch crest/banner of the stars.
Best spaceship combat in the anime is without any doubt Starship Operators. Although there arent impressively sprawling huge fleets - Starship Operators present what is actually a plausible abstraction. Something that may very well be how space war will be waged in reality.
I found crest of the star's unique take on spaceship combat interesting personally...
Unique - without a doubt, but i, for one, like to be able to understand whats going on, as well as enjoy its uniqueness.
I tried to watch it, i really did, but...it didnt grab me. At all. It wasnt a hard enough sci-fi.the sci-fi anime community turned their nose up at it because it was based on a fujoshi manga.
Buuuuuut, i guess if G-P are subbing it - it must have some merits...probably. I'll probably check it when i wont have anything else to watch, which is doubtful, as my waiting list is already quite huge.
Er, I watched all of Toward the Terra (the TV series adapted from To Terra), completely translated (and translated well at that). Is that what you're thinking of? It's an excellent series in many ways, one of my favorites in fact, and yes you can find a batch torrent of the whole series in various popular torrent spots.
Well... yes, it's based on fujoshi manga. It's a sci-fi story for women. So its storytelling priorities are quite different from what one might expect from the male-oriented approach to traditional sci-fi.
Huh are you talking about the series with the Mu (physics) and soldier blue or am i thinking of something else?
In the event you are, it has been translated for a long time and it was an amazing show (in my opinion).
Wasn't a hard enough sci-fi? It was a pretty unforgiving show that would get you attached to a character and then BAM he/she is dead and in this show, they don't come back. when they're dead, they're dead. It also had a good ending that wasn't what i expected in the least. It didn't have a lot of super technology though if that is what you mean. At least half of the fighting was done by physic energy instead of technology.
I won't say what happens because QT3 doesn't have spoiler tags, but Tokyo Magnitude 8 Episode 10. Damn.

There is actually no consistent, one-group, translation yet. I suggest waiting for G_P to finish. One of the best groups out there. In the event you are, it has been translated for a long time and it was an amazing show (in my opinion).
It has been a while since i watched it, but I remember the fan subs being pretty good (although i don't speak Japanese, it was easily understandable and made sense). Yeah, it was by two different groups, but what works works. G_P is good though.
I guess anything with people flying through the atmosphere/space and blowing up space ships using physic energy probably isn't very "Hard Sci-fi" under that definition then.
Is this the same show:

Or are you talking about something different?
Yeah that looks like it is it. There is a movie by the same name, but that is 6 discs so i assume it is the bigger series and the graphics are from the series.
Surprised to see it actually got picked up in NA (even though it is a really good series).
