Eh, first episode of Utawarerumono sucked. Boring and excessively generic. Only thing I can really recommend at this point is KIBA.

Not even a little. It's a neat story with awesome art, at least in the manga. I really hope that Clamp's Aubrey Beardsley-esque art nouveau style carries over to the anime.

It's really a great series. I'm up to episode 39 or so out of 70-something episodes. I'm really taking my time because I don't want it to end. It feels very "adult" (not in the porn-type way either) in it's characters and storyline. Last episode I finally found out what the closing credits images were all about. :)

I looooooved Ouran High School Host Club, and I bet Anders and I are the only ones who will enjoy it. Still, the first episode was utter goddamn hilarity.

I'm watching Ergo Proxy, which is somewhat incoherent but stylish and interesting, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is coherent and stylish and interesting, and xXxHolic. Also, working on finishing Karin the Bloodgiving Vampire, which surprised me in many ways. Mostly by not making the main romance suck.

OH! And the first two episodes of Dai Mahou Touge are worth watching for the suicidal vegetables alone.

Can't comment on the dub. Well, I did like ROD the OAV a hell of a lot, so I had a vested interest in it. And there wasn't any overly sweet and retarded little sister character. At this point I'm not even giving them a chance. Of course, Michelle is overly sweet, but at least she's the older sister, the dynamic is different.

I think I've commented elsewhere that Area 88 is mostly awful.

xxxHolic is a Production IG show, which means the possibility of it being halfway decent is high. Looks quite interesting. Speaking of which, they've also announced production on Le Chevalier D'Eon, which is an 18th century mystery type show set in France.

Just caught part of a new kids n' mecha show that has some possibilities, Zegapain, which one should be able to catch online.

It looks like Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society will be a 120 (or maybe 100, I forget) minute movie, though they haven't said if it's going to be televised, OVA, etc.

Disgaea wasn't bad. Not hilarious, but it flowed well and I enjoyed it. Didn't really enjoy xxxHolic.

Well, now I've started watching Simoun. I'm totally rooting for the nation that doesn't have the Simoun, though. I don't know if I'm supposed to feel like that or not.
For those of you who know what Simoun is, you may now sigh at me being me.

Or rather, more afraid of what they've done to it. Dare I watch the first ep?

I watched an episode of it to see what you were talking about and man those are some really stupid looking eyes they got drawn everywhere, like big rain puddles, and its a show with a bunch of prepubescent girls kissing each other to start up aircraft... hoo-kayyy...

I had no idea what you meant but I downloaded it anyway and watched. It was kinda lame (but not nearly as bad as that other one) I guess, but the bishonen and obsessive/pushy girl type stuff is a real turnoff.

Simoun - WTF?! Most boring anime ever. And do these people have an audio director? Because they looped the same opera song over and over for about 20 minutes! Good god this anime was nothing short of painful.

I've watched 2 episodes of .hack//Roots now, and it lines up pretty well against the previous .hack's. So far it's no .hack//Sign, but the animation, music, and MMO references are enjoyable as usual. A veteran player, for example, ridicules a newbie for training himself in multiple weapons instead of focusing on a single skill. Two men posing as women talk about how it's easier to pk and steal from people because they're using female characters (and their voices even change in mid-pk attempt). All in all... pretty good.

At this point I'll watch Simoun to see the god-freaks get their asses kicked. I suppose they'll wise up, though...

Wow, crazy season. I've watched at least a dozen series so far. So, here's my top 3 recommendations, all must-see, in my opinion.

Jyu Oh Sei - I've only since 1 episode of this, but it's probably going to be the best of the season. The approach is awesome -- On a space station, two young twins come home to find their parents murdered. They get gassed and wake up on a strange planet where all the vegetation is carniverous. They're mysteriously given a beam knife and vegetation repellent and have to survive. Aside from being one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen, the execution is so perfect it's almost too good. But, it's by Studio Bones (Wolf's Rain, Eureka Seven) so this is pretty much becoming par for the course for them.

The Third (Aoi Hitomi noShoujo) - The budget for this anime is probably massive. The story is difficult to figure out/explain at this point, but the action was so satisfying it's more than worth watching just for that.

KIBA - Still pretty good, but slowed down since the first episode. It's got sort of a Mai HiME meets Scryed vibe going on, and it pulls it off pretty well. I'm enjoying it.

Ok, I've been totally neglecting anime for a long time (well, other than catching the third ZG movie), but over the weekend I watched a bunch of this seasons shows. Here's my pics after a few ep of each:

Nana: Ok, I read the manga and I like it. That confessed, the anime is so far at the not-sure-it'll-work-but-haven't-given-up-hope-yet stage for me. Ie they haven't totally screwed it up. Yet. If you are at all interested in a sophisticated (for the genre) well-written jousei romance drama, this is the one.

School Rumble 2nd Term: more School Rumble. What else to say?

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: The first ep's joke was great but went too far and I almost gave up. The second ep won me over. Clever and very slickly done. High hopes...

Ouran High School Host Club: not my usual fare, but has excellent direction (and general animation quality). Not sure if I'll be bored in a few ep or it will hold me, but so far I'm really enjoying it's over-the-top shoujo-ness. I crack up whenever the King sulks...

    Yet to watch:
    XXXHolic

    School Rumble 2nd Term,

    Karin - funny vampires :)

Ghost in The Shell Stand Alone Complex

Whoa, I just watched Witchblade #1 and it was very enjoyable. Based on the comic book (loosely) and I think they did a pretty damn good Japanese take on it. It's a Gonzo series though, so expect large breasts -- not that the original Witchblade character didn't have large breasts, but these are even bigger. It's pretty much what you would expect to happen if they combined The Guyver with the Witchblade comic. Still, it's good stuff. Check it out.

If you're still wondering "should I watch Ouran High School Host Club?" here's something to help you decide:

(actually, "you two" is a mistranslation, I think)

Hmm. Let's see. Ok, there's a girl with a sword, who's some sort of mercenary. Her best (and apparently only) friend is a talking AI tank. Between killing things she tends to dwell on poetic insight about the world around her. The rest of the episode mostly revolved around her cutting up a bunch of giant spiders, but man oh man, great action scenes and lots of high quality animation. At the end of the episode she meets a mysterious manboy, wandering alone in the desert, who obviously is going to set the real storyline in motion. (Yeah, I know. Not the best description)

It has a very good flow, and of course, lots and lots of quality animation. Watch it for the action if nothing else. But from the looks of it, the story might not be half bad either.

Just watched the first two episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and it looks to be awesome. The first episode warmed both my cynical anime heart and my amateur movie-making heart.

Jyu Oh Sei is awesome guys. 5 episodes in and it's probably the best anime I've watched in years.
