Service Pack 2: Still a bad idea?

Microsoft released a shit ton of new security updates today, but most of them require SP2. I haven't installed that yet because of all the horror stories. Is it really that bad? Anyone had their computer hosed by it?

If you turn off the built-in firewall, does it still have problems running some games?

It's working fine for me, with the firewall running -- for a new game, Windows pops up and asks me "do you want to unblock this, or what?" once; once I tell it "yep, I do", it's fine.

Anyway, here's the list of programs that get broken by SP2, if you want to make sure your faves aren't on the list.

Only game that doesn't work for me is Freedom Force :(

I'm not updating to SP2 until I take a couple days off of work. Maybe around Thanksgiving. That way, I have enough time to fix things in case something gets borked up.

I have been running into more and more systems borked by SP2. Internet not working, printers stop working, running even slower than before, etc. (My company fixes puters.)

I've installed it on both my home computers and have had zero problems and have loved the pop up block. Just my two cents.

I also installed it and had zero performance problems and zero gaming problems.

I have not in my brand spankin' new PC at home because of the paranoid folks around here have me scared. At work, where we mostly do internet and accounting software, we have it on two systems. Not a problem.

Alright, I'll hold off. Looks like about 50/50 in here, and those aren't good enough odds. Thanks for the info.

    I had a hard lock problem that's vanished since I installed SP2.

50/50? Have you read this thread?

FWIW, I installed SP2 on the first of three machines, choosing the one with the fewest programs/easiest reinstall config. So far so good.

Nope, I don't read threads. I went ahead and read this one though, and I see only one person is actually having trouble. Oops.

I installed SP2, and didn't have one problem until I tried to install Rome: Total War, which quit every time without installing the game. Uninstalling SP2 allowed me to install the game, but I've not put it back yet.

Between my home system, and the 18 systems I shepherd through the day at work, NOT installing SP2 is infinitely more frustrating and annoying than installing it. I've never met a whinier update, and seeing the way it's working at home, I cannot wait until I'm greenlighted to put it in at work.

It only causes problems in some very rare situations.

Zap your spyware, update your printer drivers, and run Windows Update before you install install SP2. (There are a couple of pre-SP2-installation patches on Update that fix some of the early problems some users reported. They'll show up if you need them.) Do that and you should have no problems.

I have SP2 on all our computers except my notebook, which will be upgraded once Freedom Force is fixed. :)

Stupid question, but just to be absolutely sure, do you mean zap my spyware removal programs (Spybot, Adaware), or the actual spyware (i.e. run Spybot and Adaware beofore installing)?

Installed SP2, things were fine for a while... until I unplugged my CH HOTAS controls. I took them out to use a gamepad, plugged them back in and windows saw them as standard USB HID joystick. Couldn't get them to see their own drivers no matter what I did - and I spent about a week beating it up. Finally reinstalled, left SP1 and the sticks returned to normal.

    No problems with SP2.

Well, except for not being able to play Freedom Force.

I kinda like SP2. On the rare occasion that I use explorer, too, I'm thankful for the pop-up blocker. Firewall hasn't given me any trouble. (Don't have Freedom Force installed anymore.)

Works for me. If you experience a lot lower performance edit the boot.ini and change the last line about /NoExecute to:
    /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

Which will disable the software NX. If you have a CPU with NX support built in then don't do this. =)

Also, I noticed one weird thing. On one comp SP2 recognized my AV fine, and the other too. Then suddenly it said on one comp that it was "outdated" and even after I manually update it a bunch of times it still had a security warning thingy. So I told Security Advisor that I'd monitor it myself. The other comp is fine. Screwy. =/

No system problems here either. There was a sound problem in one game, OOTP Baseball 6, which has been fixed in the latest OOTP6 patch.

Any game that blocks Freedom Force is against justice.
