Geez, that's pretty lame.
I also love the way he simultaneously pimps himself out for more work. "Hey, got any jobs for me? I need some more preview builds to sell on ebay."
This is not a normal thread, and I appologize if it's not appropriate. Tom/Mark, delete if so.

Who is this guy? He lives in Montana. Do any of you know him? Does he work for you? If so, PM me please.

I found out who he is. If you would like to know his name, PM me please.
He has his name in one of his auctions. He wants people to donate $1 to him; in return, he will send people a newsletter and put their names in drawings for promotional items and merchandise.
Heh, he doesn't even try to conceal his email address, which leads to all sorts of fun with Google. I am, however, amused by his attempts to resell old issues of various game magazines. I mean, who buys this stuff?

To save everybody the clicking and searching, I'll be the one to point out that he does that at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=8101364769Originally Posted by ryan

"Were my livelihood" would probably be more accurate, I'd guess.
Adam, I might know who this is. If I did, hypothetically, I might be convinced to narc his name (hypothetically mind you) in exchange for non-hypothetical builds and preview discs of up and coming Sierra products. Send me an email at thecookiesnatcher AT hotmail.com if you're interested in a deal.... the hills have eyes or something.
Wow. I have no problem with people selling their boxed copies when they are done, as long as they are no special promtional or press copies.
But this is just 100% bullshit. Assholes like this just make it harder for everyone else.

Ebay was built on that question.Originally Posted by Alan Au

j/k
This is just utter stupidity here. No one with a clue would try to sell media builds if they had any desire of keeping their job.
If they are CD-RW disks then definitely worth more than a retail copy. Blank disks have value.Originally Posted by Lokust
If you have to sell all your swag on eBay for some spare change, that might be God's way of telling you that you're not a very good freelance writer.
Well, I think word will get around very quickly on this guy. He might have a hard time finding work after this.
/looking for the "stupid a-hole" emoticon...
Carlos McElfish is this guy's real name? There must be a better story behind that than there is selling game builds.
Anyone wanna buy an old Allegiance beta cd? Dirt cheap! :D
Wow, someone's career just went down the toilet right before my eyes.

I think the idea was an editor could tell Adam who this guy was and help them track him down and put a stop to his peddling of golds, etc.I don't get how an editor could have helped out in this situation. You wacky PR people use editors for the strangest reasons. :)
And perhaps also to make sure he doesn't get any more assignments, dunno.
As opposed to a writer? You know how those writers are. If you want to track someone down, ask an editor.

I'm not condoning this in any way, but how many years after a product has shipped will such "rare memorabilia" be looked at in a different light? There's an entire subculture out there that collects rare games, imports, and oddities relating to old computers and consoles. Some of the major magazines have covered this in detail, along with lists of how much each rare copy of a game might cost. Some of these include previously unreleased preview builds that have somehow been unearthed.
I suppose it's similar to the argument about abandonware - at what stage does a piece of unavailable software become classed as "abandonware"? (yes, the real answer is "never in your lifetime" without the owners permission).
It seems that "what's legal" and "what's acceptable" correlate less with increasing time.
Uh, the game in question, Flat Out, hasn't even been released yet.
