Mig Alley - Can you help a brother out?

Decided to whip out my cd for Mig Alley over the weekend and I can't find the manual. I did manage to locate the keycard but I think the actual manual is long gone - and I'd kinda like to have it. I checked the cd and there's no PDF one there, but I'm told that on the budget release there *was* a PDF manual since no printed one was available for it.

Could anyone direct me to - or provide - a download location for this item?

Also, are there any enhancements that have been done to make the landscape (especially airfields) not so blech?

Thanks. While it isn't the manual it's pretty much the info I'm looking for minus the history-channel fluff. I also found a campaign strategy guide that I think is a good fistfull of clue.

    Thanks.

There are also a team of modders working on it, I believe. I'm not positive, but I think you can install the patch for BoB? Or maybe it's a different patch, but made by the same group. I know there has been some work done on it. Check at SimHQ forums.

Yeah, I've got that patch. Haven't really dug into what it does just yet, but it's on there. Man I just wish it had the terrain of Falcon4 BMS2 with hitiles.

I dunno what the deal is with Rowan and keyboard layouts, but it seems that they had some secret rule when they made a sim that the key commands had to be completely funky compared to any sim you might actually be familiar with.

Yeah, roger the keyboard layout thing. Your best bet is to get into Rowan sims all at once. From Mig Alley, go directly to BoB and then back to Flying Corps.

Dude, man, Rowan had fuxor3d keyboard layouts from the day. Check out Air Power, Strike Fighters, Operation Overlord, Dawn Patrol, etc. They never did like the old industry standard of F-keys for views.

It was a pickle fork thing, I guess.

The different keyboard layout is all about immersion!

You're not flying a sim, you're flying Rowan!

Just kidding; aside from the lame graphics (even for their time), Rowan flightsms are the best, IMHO. And MA is a classic, even for Rowan.

I came too late for Flying Corps, however, never could get it to run on the machines I had.

Really? I get Flying Corps Gold to run just fine these days. Try this fix from NTcompatible.com. This is what worked for me.

Also, I didn't mind the Rowan setups too much. Once you got used to 'em, you had some of the finest sims around waiting to suck you in for weeks, if not months.

*IX*,did you have any problems installing under XP?I tried today to install on a vanilla P4 HP Home system,1 hard drive, etc, and it keeps hanging when it gets most of the way through, giving an error of 'could not open file, please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory'.It always seems to hang on this strange file:'C:\rowan\mig\H\DIR.DIR'.I don't recall having any problems installing under W95/98.

No issue at all. Try this... pull the cd contents into a folder on your desktop and initiate the install from there.

Mike, I had something like this happen /w MA and solved it by cleaning the disk. I think it was a differnt file, but it kept failing in the same spot. There was a big greasy finger print on the data side of the disk. I wiped it off and it worked great.

Thanks for the idea,Tim.There're no really noticeable scratches or prints, but I tried giving it a good cleaning anyway. No dice, still the same error on the same file.I think you're right, though,it must just be a defective disc if you guys had no problem.Maybe I can pick up another copy in the bargain bins.

hurm. It might also be some sort of copy protection issue. I know that dir.dir file is the one you have to edit to get the thing to work w/o the CD.

Can you try to install it on a different comp to see if it just doesn't like your hardware?

I can try installing on my old beater P2.Maybe I'll give that a shot tonight, just to make sure it's really a bad disc.

Well,it installs just fine on my old beater, and plays just fine, too. So it seems to be either something with XP,or the cd rom drive in the newer computer.I haven't had any issues with the drive prior to this, though, and I've had it about a year and a half.I'm half tempted to throw the drive from my beater into my newer computer, and try it out.

All right, for anyone who experiences this problem, this thread discusses *exactly* what I've experienced.Apparently, you have to install and run the game in W95/98 compatibility mode if you bought one of the early versions of the cd rom.Following the advice in this thread,I got it to install without problems, but I'm still getting an error trying to run the game.I think I can solve this problem, however, with a little tinkering.Serves me right for being an early adopter.

As usual, usenet has the answer to any of life's questions. :D
