    Air Buccaneers

Anyone else tried the Air Buccaneer mod that's currently in development for Unreal Tournament 2003/2004?

Seems like an interesting mix of balloon airship based combat with cannons, air mines and a number of other fantasy ancient weapons hundreds of feet up.

Why do you need a cannon to shoot down a balloon? :D

Because small arms fire doesn't poke big enough holes in a balloon to bring it down.

Sounds similar to Flying Heroes. Of course it doesn't have huge two-headed lizards, or flying teapots, or birds, but still.

So umm, why play this when you can play Flying Heroes? :P

We played this mod at a LAN party this weekend, and everyone thought it was a lot of fun.

It is not just a FPS in balloons. You really need a full crew in one balloon to appreciate the game. When the game is going well and you have a captain at the helm of your flagship, barking orders about which side the enemy is coming up on, and you have two men manning the cannons, and a another two loading, firing, and using small arms, I find the game to be a much more compelling team experience than any other multiplayer game I can think of. This is because you really have to work as a whole, an individual won't be able to control a ship as effectively as a crew. I would describe the game as a combination of Unreal, Scorched Earth, um... and some sort of hot air balloon simulator. It is a weird combination, but it works.

Now if there were just grappling hooks for boarding the enemy ships so that we could cut them down with our swords, the game would be perfect.

I thought you could rope to another ship and do that.

I played for a bit and it's fun but it felt a bit lonely; if you didn't have a good crew, a lot of the action takes place far away from you.
